Impulse client won't let me buy games.

By on September 15, 2008 6:53:58 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

I've been wrestling with this and reading forum notes about impulse issues, but so far no dice.  Here's the latest impulse log entry on my system.  I've updated .NET 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5.  I've got Microsoft people calling me up to tell me to stop re-checking Windows Update.  Sid Meier has offered to email me a copy of Railroads because he feels my pain, and the Witcher team is putting Impulse in as a new boss monster in the next community driven expansion for their game.

I don't know what microsoft.mshtml is all about unfortunately, and googling the topic is talking about encryption certification keys.  What gives?

Seriously, I can't buy anything on Impulse.  It's so broken it times out just trying to log in and confirm registrations.**  I could do it through my web browser - but I won't be able to validate registration.  I'll miss out on the $4 pre-order savings for the Witcher, but then again I suppose if I can't buy it, I'd actually save 100% of the cost.  I guess I don't really need a 2005/6 game like Railroads! either.  Maybe this is why it's called "Impulse" - it protects the customer from impulse purchases.  Stardock is teh awesome looking out for it's customers that way!

** BTW, I can't click the top left blue stardock button to change server from US 1 to US 2 (hoping that might fix the logging in problem) because that button is LOCKED out until after it logs in and validates registration codes - according to the message "Cannot perform this action at this time.  Please try again after validating registrations."  User Experience score = -1.  Seriously, STARDOCK we need a way to change Impulse options without requiring logging in and validating registrations, as demonstrated by this issue.

I was able to purchase, though the client never finished "Validating registrations".  When I went to "Continue Shopping" it exploded though.  The trick is to avoid the "Buy Now" button, and go through the "Details" button to get to the purchase and cart.  But if you use the "Buy Now" button it's toast.  Also, there are two pairs of two flavors for The witcher now.  The Witcher: Extra and The Witcher:Enhanced.  Hopefully I got the right one.  Hopefully it's not the edited for young children version of the game that someone else mentioned on the forums.  I'm off to try to bypass Impulse again in order to puchase Railroads!   Wish me luck.  And fix impulse please.  It's stuck.

September 15, 2008 8:12:01 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

oh, just got an impulse client update.  Same issue, but it loads up reliably now and only dies when you click "Buy Now".  Also, I discovered that the exact same issue also occurs on my Vista/Intel/ATI laptop.  The computer representing the error dumps above is an XP/AMD/nVidia desktop.

So my account is broken maybe?

What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed on your machine?

September 15, 2008 10:30:17 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

IE8 Version 8.0.6001.18241

Firefox 3.01 is my system default browser.

I was able to complete the order and download so I'm feeling less pressed for time about resolving this.  The issue and related errors remain though.

September 15, 2008 11:08:34 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

Another topic response indicates that the issue may be due to google-analytics.com being blocked (which it is on my network) that is causing the issue.  If that's true, I think it's awesome that I can kill a client-side app by blocking a 3rd-party cross-domain tracker site script.

September 16, 2008 8:54:19 AM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

there's a script "ga.js" that is the only JS script that comes in as a stream, where the other 10 scripts on that page are well-formatted code, ga.js comes through as one long 9kb text stream with no eol cr or lf characters at all.  So yeah, maybe google-analytics (ga.js) is the culprit.  I don't intend to allow that script through though, so it would be great if SD put in some effort to ensure scripts they're pushing don't break the browser tech Impulse requires.

Good Morning,

We are currently experiencing intermittent issues with one of our Impulse servers.  There are folks working on correcting the issue right now and everything will hopefully be back in working order very soon.

I'll come back to this thread when we have thing 100% happy again and see if you're still having your issue.

I apologize for the inconvenience,

-Mike

I'm still having the same issues, error logs are showing the same 404 error.  I'm running IE 7.0.60001.18000.  Also, the Witcher is finally showing up in my Games list, but when I try to install, I get an error saying there is not enough space (after accepting the EULA).  Because I can't edit my preferences, I'm not sure which hdd it is trying to install to, but each of my drives has 20+ gigs free, and the game says it requires 13.

It's working now, thanks.

ok roger re: IE8. fwiw, had similar types of java script errors in Impulse under IE7.  I don't have a ton of confidence that the javascript errors are going to go away, because I do block sites outside of stardock, impulsedriven.*, and such.  Please handle the errors differently and please make the error dialogs non-Modal.  It makes the situation worse - and non-recoverable, when you can't access the Impulse UI because a variable in a tracking script from ga.js (google-analytics) and tiny_mce.js puke.

On the plus side, at least the impulse client launches now.

Quoting Faxanadu,

Just for referance sake the location and the temp folder must both be on the drive with more space. If the temp folder is still located on the smaller of the two drives Impulse will still tell you that not enough space is available.

About to have a problem I think.  Impulse failed to download Witcher twice so far.  I checked drive space and Impulse is using up

26.3 GB (28,285,029,533 bytes)

I narrowed it down to this folder on my PC:

E:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Stardock\Impulse\Temporary\DownloadQueue\twee

Currently there are 4 files after a 3rd restart of the TWEE downloader:

BIT1BA.tmp  8.40 GB (9,029,205,283 bytes)

BIT1D8.tmp  8.40 GB (9,029,205,283 bytes)

BIT1FA.tmp  8.40 GB (9,029,205,283 bytes)

twee1.4.001.impulse  1.28 GB (1,376,866,628 bytes)

Impulse doesn't seem to be able to pick up the downloads where it left off.  But why isn't it cleaning up after itself if it decides to restart the download from the beginning every time I get:

When I reinstalled XP on this PC, and modified my old partition structure. One thing I did was reduce the size of my Profiles partition to 48GB, because on my prior build after about 3 years, I used up only a few GB as part of user profiles.

I've got about 17gb left on my profiles partition.  It's important that Impulse clean up after itself if it has to restart a download from scratch.  Or.. bettter!... don't download from scratch.  Pick up after it left off.  What files can I delete after this process is over?
