Just thought I'd get this going and then weigh in sometime soon.  I picked it up and, so far, absolutely love it.  My first character is a Sith Juggernaut Warrior.  I love how its really story driven and the huge amount of voice acting.  I also dig how crafting is setup.  Anyway, all the time I'm going to put into this post for now... back to playing

Thought I'd update this with some useful info instead of having to dig through the thread.

Clan info, servers, etc.

Many of us are on the Kass City server - includes many SD staffers + folks from the community

  • pacov (pacov)- Bounty Hunter - mercenary (dps) - level 50
  • pewpewpacov - Imperial Agent - sniper (dps) - level 30ish
  • ryat (ryat) - Bounty Hunter - power tech
  • carbon (Ryden) - Sith Assassin
  • seamw (Ahblaka) - imperial agent

Ryat has several other character on Hyperspace Cannon server:

Ryat - Sentinel
Ryata - Gunslinger
Tayme - Sage
Zachy - Commando

Yeah - I played WoW for a little bit.  To say the least, it was no where near as immersive for me.  In that game, I found myself often just blowing through many of the quests without reading them.  With SWTOR, its really easy to get sucked up into the story as you are constantly making decisions and participating in the story in a meaningful way.

Getting into a group when I needed to was super easy as well.  There was no waiting around.  Just happened to be someone else looking for a teammate to go after the harder areas immediately.

After level 10, you can queue up for PvP warzones or something to that effect.  This took me and like 39 other people or so to a capture the flag/control sort of map where we fought for control on the ground of AA canons that were trying to destroy either a rebel or imperial ship.

Random question - so, my juggernaut sith warrior can apparently have a shield going for him.  I now have an item that appears to be a shield, but I have no idea how to turn it on.  What else do I need to make it work?  Thanks.

My opinion so far is that the leveling experience is very solid. I'm looking forward to reaching higher up with all the "good stuff". A few of the animations are a bit silly, a bit too "flashy", like they're on a stage. It works better in fantasy games, imho, but it seems a bit silly in a sci-fi universe.

I will be online soon as I am getting this for Christmas.  It was hard for me not to turn it on since I had early access, but if my kids saw me playing the game they were getting me for a present they would be crushed, so I've had to wait.     We should start a stardock clan, Elemental clan...something.

Very entertaining and does some things much better than WoW.

It's the only game I have right now that's totally ripping me away from my regular daily helping of Demigod.

Quoting Heavenfall,
My opinion so far is that the leveling experience is very solid.

At lower levels it's great, though I'm finding that as you get up higher, the variety thins and there tend to be more quests that amount to "slog through this unbelievably large palace full of mobs to your goal, then come back" type quests.

I like this game a lot.  I'm up to level 25 after having played way too much this weekend.  Jedi Guardian feels a bit weak, but still isn't too hard, so its all good.

Love the game so far, up to level 23 with my Commando Medic.  The mazes to get Datacrons are both frustrating and hilarious at times, I fell 6 times trying to get one today.

My Sith Assassin is around level 22 or so.  One thing though I noticed, healers are in high demand.

Yeah - I might have to make a healer before too long.  I was lucky enough to get into a group that had a healer during my 1st group quest.   I was me (tank), healer, and an assassin.  Getting those heals on my made a huge difference allowing me to stay in the mix longer.  Hopefully that's a little less of an issue as soon as I learn how to use shields.  Oh well - was certainly a big help to have the heals.

My dark side warrior juggernaut is about level 13 or so.  Hopefully I'll get a chance to keep on moving up today.

Seriously, though - does anyone know how to make shields work on your characters?  My juggernaut class is supposed to have a shield that he can use.  I believe I have the right item, but no idea how to turn it on.  Odds are its something simple, but I haven't figured it out yet.. and it would be exceptionally useful as its a bit of the reason for my class.

The shield is just a proc, isnt it?  As in you equip it, and it procs every once in a while automatically.  By default shields are pretty crappy - 5% proc at 20% is only a 1% overall damage reduction.   But with skills the shielding effect becomes substantial.

smeh - yeah - i figured it out.  I just saw a human running around with a full blown shield (circling him) and assumed that's what I should have seen if it was working.  My mistake.

Yeah, that was probably a bounty hunter popping his mitigation cooldown.

yeah - it was a bounty hunter for sure.    Ah well, learned something anyway.

I was just talking to a bud that apparently picked up SWTOR as well.  He's telling me that he's on a server that is constantly full.  Said he has to wait like 30 minutes to log in (he does it to play with his pals that are on the server).  That kind of sucks.

Other thing I learned - your characters are apparently per server?  This means that if I want to play on a difference server, I have to create a brand new character.  Maybe that's common knowledge for experienced MMO folks, but I didn't know.

Anyway, been noticing some bugs as well lately... the most annoying was on the black talon up against a padawan.  I had a group of 3 people.  We did a bunch of damage to her... then she bugged out, flipped off the screen, and reappeared with full health.  This happened 4 times.  One of my teammates died, but we managed to win.  Super annoying.

Another one happens when I join a party but am not a leader. I think its related to the leader going off line or something.  Anyway, I end up with their portrait in the bottom left hand corner, but I'm unable to leave the group unless I log out.  Never happens if I'm the party leader.  Anyway, a bit annoying.

Then there's the super reverse flash characters that someone ended up near me, but are apparently in the wrong place.  They just get warped back to where they should be.  Kind of weird to watch as they are right near you, then get zapped a big distance away until they are gone.  Only seen this randomly, though.

Still having fun ofc.

Yes, each character is tied to one and only one server.  This is standard for MMOs - you create a character on a server and it generally stays there.  Some games let you transfer characters to a new server (usually for a price), but thats not exactly that common.

The bug with enemy mobs dropping aggro and going to full health was all over for a little bit last night.  It seemed to have been fixed outside of about a 15 minute window.

So I'm playing a game last night and I get to a group area where I'm sure I'm going to need some help.  So, I wait around a bit and try to invite folks or get invited.  No go for like 5 minutes.  So, I open up general chat and say invite me.  But this is general chat, so I'm guessing it broadcast to in the same area as me or whatever.  Someone invites me and I accept.  Thing is, these guys are looking to do the black talon and I've already completed it.  Now, I'm level 18.  These guys are all level 11 and 12 (3 other guys).  I decide to tag along and join them.  Enter boring fest for me.  I get like next to no gold, next to no exp, and everyone except exactly 1 battle, has their health/damage scaled to the lower level folks.  So, I'm just ripping through everyone.  It was very strange how they decided to make 1 enemy I fought against (not the padawon) extremely strong.  As in, without me, my entire group would have been slaughtered and I was nearly killed as well.

Anyway, I finish the mission.

So questions:  the only thing I really got out of the mission was social points.  What good is this for me in the long run?  Nice to feel like I've accomplished something anyway.  What are better ways to get into parties?

Where exactly do I go to leave a party if I'm not the leader?  I feel like I must be doing something wrong here.

If you're looking for a group, pretty much the only way to go is to specify in general chat that you are (and for what). There's a LFG flag in the who screen, but I don't imagine anyone really looks at that. There's no automated grouping system at present.

It was very strange how they decided to make 1 enemy I fought against (not the padawon) extremely strong.

That's the final boss of the dungeon. If it was that bad for an 18, then the other guys in the group probably didn't know what they were doing.

Where exactly do I go to leave a party if I'm not the leader? I feel like I must be doing something wrong here.

Right click your portrait, there's an option to drop group in the menu.

And unless you're going just for the custom item drops (orange items whose stats are based on the mods you plug in), there's no point in doing level-inappropriate content unless you're helping someone or farming social/alignment points.

What about space combat? Is it any fun or just tacked onto the rest of the real game?

Feels a bit tacked on. Granted, I have only done the Fondor mission. Have heard Bioware is planning on expanding a lot of the game in the coming years though, not just more content, but more "game" as well. I'm imagining that is something they might up the ante on in the long run.

Adding something like Rogue Squadron to the game would probably justify another sixty dollar expansion. How cool would it be to have a really good SW fighter interact with the game they already have?

Okay, I am going to try Sith Operative first, despite what my avatar here suggests. Anyone here playing this class yet?
