DG Players: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Those to be Avoided

By on December 21, 2009 3:02:07 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

This thread has been closed by pacov - a new thread has been created here:  https://forums.demigodthegame.com/383615

Why create this thread?

Simply stated, the ladder is generally not the best depiction of skill, imho.  It GENERALLY tracks who plays the game the most and/or who acts like a jerk by cheating instead of who the most talented players are.  That's not to say that everyone high up in the ladder falls into this category.  So, if I were to put together my own ladder that indicated skill, I wonder how things would shake out.  Obvious hurdles being that many highly skilled individuals don't play each other.  So, this requires either the people that don't play together to play more together (my personal choice) or I have to rely from feedback from other players.

Your part if you want to participate

Who do you guys think are the best players in demigod today?  I understand that its a team game, but individual players do tend to stand out (and I also know that one great player can't guarantee a win if he has weak teammates, etc).  I'm happy to have everyone's feedback.  I'm not looking for people to jump in and flame. Just call out who you think is great or who you'd like to see fight.  Perhaps we'll get games going.  You want to flame and talk crap, your post will probably end up deleted.

You can nominate anyone you want.  To keep this from being a list of who likes who, several individuals that are generally considered excellent at the game will moderate the list.  If those individuals generally agree, a player can be removed or promoted in the list.

I've decided on 4 categories of players and have provided descriptions of each.  Please recommend players along with the category you feel they fit in.

Tier 1 Demigod Players:

Realistically, its my belief that there are 10-30 players in this game that are tier 1 DG players (the best). Those players shine as individuals, generally with a wide variety of characters and do not depend on a specific team or teammate to do well.  They can play exceptionally in 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5.  These are players that do not cheat or desync games.  These are the people that you want on your team or you want to play against because you know you will get a good game.  Any player in this list or any other should currently be an active player.

Tier 2 Demigod Players:

These are players that don't quite currently fit into highest level of players, but are good players all the same.  Perhaps they require a specific team or can only do well in specific types of games (1v1, 2v2).  The bottom line is that they aren't quite as polished or versatile as the highest level players.

Tier 3 Demigod Players:

A third group (or list) would be everyone else. No need to list individuals...

Demigod Players that Should Be Avoided:

These would be specific individuals that clearly (and I mean clearly) cheat.  You don't get on this list unless I (pacov) am VERY convinced that you belong here.

  • AlienWarrior - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter confirmed by pacov.  As of 1/5/2010, this player has 34 wins and 0 losses and is ladder ranked 34.  I played a game with him in a 1v1 with him as the host.  After confirming that the player spoke English, I asked him if he would let the stats count if I beat him (there is currently a simple exploit that enables any host in a 1v1 game to make the game disappear if they don't want the stats to be kept - Also note that this player plays almost exclusively 1v1 games).  The player did not respond to my question.  As I began to tear down both sides of the player's base, he used the stat exploit and the game vanished as a result.  The player used this exploit with about 10 minutes left in the game.  Based on his stats and skill level (read: not highly skilled), this player is clearly exploiting the stat system.
  • PrizmSmurf - This player should be avoided.  Stat exploiter and poor sport confirmed by pacov on 4/1/2010.  After losing in a 2v2 matchup, PrizmSmurf said "I hope you die a long slow death of cancer.  I mean it."  Then said, "Bet you are going to enjoy watching me desync."  Then, just before the citadel went down, desynced the game. Based on his stats, he clearly does not desync games on a regular basis, but wishing cancer on someone because they beat you in a game and then committing the one offense in demigod that can get you banned (saying you are desycning then desyncing) is a bit over the top.  I suggest you avoid him.

lol that was a favour mod game so it dont count

My first favor mod game online. You guys had huge advantage and I really dont know why did you concede.

Sedna was our prime target all the game, so its not really his fault.

If the categories are defined, the categorization is more standardized and static.

If people are just grouped by skill, the tiers will be relative and shifting based on the skill level of the players on the list. The latter strategy is a much more arbitrary system, but it has its advantages.

It is much easier to say person x is better than person y through a few games, but if you have descriptions of the tiers, it's much harder to move people around and add new people.

Fair points split.  If it was just my list, though, it would have clearly defined tiers, the list wouldn't look "quite" like what koush posted, etc... if its pacovs list.  And, it really hasn't been that.  Its always been a semi community owned list, semi accurate based on how much I cared to update, how much input I was willing to accept, and so on.  In short, not a perfect system and it really will continue to be a little like that as long as I'm running the show. So, I says to myself - should a list like this keep going on?

Pros:

  • Gets competition going in our community
  • Provides peer feedback (you think you are great, everyone else thinks you are meh - hmmm)
  • Hopefully provides a better tracking of player skill than the ladder
  • People are apparently really interested in talking about this stuff (1602 replies as of now)

Cons:

  • The list really becomes biased pretty quickly
  • People get worked up about this BS and do take offense (which leads to a bit of hostility from time to time) - do we want to invite more drama?
  • (For whoever owns the list) - its alot of updating if you are going to keep it accurate.

Anyway, I honestly don't care if the list keeps going or not. I'd participate some if it did, but I think its time to turn the list over to someone else.  The question is, who would be good for the job?  Ideally, the person wouldn't be terribly biased (I don't know many people like this), would be willing to make frequent updates (I know a few that wouldn't mind), and would have to have the communities backing (because without any community backing ever, this list would have just been the rantings of pacov - or just a list where I say blahblahblah are great and these guys are meh).

You can give it to Koush so no one cares about it anymore.

This thing is done and soo out of context that it has no relevance anymore.

I can vote for closing tier list, and if its going to be updated or someone is going to create new one then put me on tier3, dont put me anywhere or whatever, because i really dont care about those lists. I know that im not perfect, but i also know that i have won several times with 2 random 'tier 3 players' against teams with all 'tier 1 players' or tier 1 mixed with tier 2 players and does that prove anything? imo no. Demigod is that kind of game where for win/lose responsible is whole team, yeah you can win by yourself but maybe in newbie games. And i dont want to be put above someone or below by someone who never/almost never played with me and judging other people by one/two game/s is unfair. But it's just how i see things

Quoting GM-Zen_God,
To make it more interesting. What about scheduling games to determine tiers (when in doubt) . So for instance, if someone wants to prove himself against the community's opinion he or she can contact pacov, who will then arrange a "tier match". Those being 1on1s 2on2s or 3on3s.

The reason for this is, that most good players will take such games more serious and try and do their best. In contrast, in so called PUG games highly skilled players will more often screw around and not show their full potential. As a result people cannot argue with replays where they somehow beat a higher ranked player in a pug game, when it did not mean anything at the time for the higher ranked player.

In the tournament, you could see for the first time people playing serious for sure, since money and honor was on the line. Tier matches would resemble this kind of scenario and give a more realistic tier system result.

just going to repost this, since no one gave feedback on this. The list would become like a little league that has to prove itself with games that count.

Thanks for reposting that - a lot of good ideas have been buried and lost in this thread.  And I think we really should have a clear way to advance through rankings and this might be a good way.  The question is, let's say me and billy bob are tier 1.5.  We think we belong in tier 1.  Who do we have to beat to get to tier 1?  If tier 1 is the best of the best, then me and billy bob beating them would mean that we belong in tier 1... or perhaps they guys we beat do not belong in tier 1.  Also, you could still be tier 1 caliber, but perhaps able to beat that specific team (but instead could maybe beat a different tier 1 team)... it can get a little dicey. I'd like it if we could come up with something like this though.

In other list related news, it is sounding like someone will be started a new thread in the near future.  Whenever that happens, I'll be closing down shop here.  I believe the goal is to form some sort of committee to determine rankings, but to pull in folks from several different skill levels and from different pockets of players so that things should be a little less biased.

Quoting OMG_pacov,

The question is, let's say me and billy bob are tier 1.5.  We think we belong in tier 1.  Who do we have to beat to get to tier 1?

You have to beat the gym leaders, who are all away doing something stupid and they won't come back until you do something totally unrelated.

I think that the tier one players would have to approve of your moving up from tier 1.5, maybe a majority rules vote.

Well, I say it's a nice thing that we're starting fresh with replays. It'll all be replays of the persons current ability

Maybe, but what's the whole process going to look like?  Some sort of challenge match followed by a decision from the tier 1s if the challengers lose?

There's more than one?

Just hold a short round-robin style tourney. It really doesn't take long to see who's better.
