Forum Slowdown

There was a post by Mumblefratz earlier about the forums being slow, but it has evidently been deleted.  I responded to another saying that the speed problem was fixed, but I spoke too soon.  It worked for maybe 5 minutes and went back to being incredibly slow. Not 10 or 15 seconds slow, but at least 30 seconds to load a page, most times more than 30 seconds.

The only websites I'm having problems with are forums.galciv2.com and forums.stardock.com.

In the deleted post, a tech asked for PING and TRACERT data.  I'm posting mine for forums.galciv2.com along with a PATHPING. I hope this helps.

Your tracert isn't incredibly bad, but it isn't great either. We're not seeing anything in our logs which would lead me to believe that the servers, applications or network is running slow on our end. Chalk it up to a temporary problem, possibly routing, for now.

It's running pretty fast for me. Generally only a few seconds to load a page.

It's always been slow for me.

I just did a Trace with NeoTrace Pro, and may have one reason why it's so slow:

Fullsize: http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traceru7.jpg

(see screenshot) my "packet" gets routed to Washington DC,
but then instead of getting further routed directly from there to MI,
for some unknown reason, my packet gets routed back to Europe, and THEN directly to MI.

Here's the text from that trace, also, repeated traces give the same results:

Cavan, this post is in Forum Issues and NOT Wincustomize Site Issues.

Please take the information you've compiled and create a new post in the proper forum so I can remove your replies from this post.

You've also replied with issues completely unrelated to the forum slowness, which counts as off topic. If you wish to report seperate issues, please help us maintain our sanity by posting seperate issues in their own post.

Thanks

Edit: We seem to have people continuing to reply about the main Wincustomize website in this post.

People - This post is not about the main Wincustomize website! Replies which comment on the main wincustomize website (www.wincustomize.com) will be moderated!

Andrew, with no disrespect or offence, please feel free to just remove all my posts here, I could create many separate posts for the issues I am having/seeing but with the WHOLE SITE crawling like a snail for me I have better ways I could spend a couple of hours other than watching the throbber in FF go round and round.

None taken. I'm sorry the site is running so slow for you. I will create a new post in Wincustomize Site Issues tomorrow and manually move your replies to that post tomorrow. I cant do it from home (where I'm at now) so I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Thanks for replying, I didn't want to do that on you until you saw the reply. If you get the itch, please feel welcome to continue replying on that post in Wincustomize Site Issues tomorrow.

Just a reminder to others continuing to reply on this post, this is for Forum issues only.

Well, it's significantly faster from home than it was at work, which is odd.  My home setup is a cheap Earthlink 768k account and my work one is a 3MB Business DSL.

I'm running the latest Firefox on both machines. I was getting 40 second page render times at work and this page at home completed in 1.33 seconds.

If it helps, I'm running a single-server/multi-client business licensed AVG Antivirus at work and I have Avira at home.

I don't know if this'll help either, but here's my tracert from home...

Well, it's significantly faster from home than it was at work, which is odd. My home setup is a cheap Earthlink 768k account and my work one is a 3MB Business DSL.
In my case it's the opposite. 768K DSL at home where access is in the 40 second per page range but fast at work (at least today it was, I was almost certain that it wasn't yesterday). Not sure what we have at work but I wouldn't be surprised if we have an OC192 backbone.

Anyway here's my home TRACERT which interestingly enough has verizon in common with Motti's OP which I assume is from his slow work access.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 but the forum access is the same whether or not it's running. I'm running IE7 with the unmodified default Medium-high security settings for the Internet zone. The only other information I can think of that may be germane is that I'm running XP Pro SP2 and do *not* have .NET framework installed.

I don't know what to say.  I started navigating to this page just under 9 minutes ago and it's taken me that long to start this post.  That's dedication, huh?

I can't say what kind of issue it is, but it's only happening on the Stardock Websites.  I'm not having problem anywhere else.  I don't know why it's only affecting some of us and others are coming through ok, but the lack of people signed in to the Galciv2 forums should be an indication that it's fairly widespread.

As I said before, I can get through from home smoothly, but at work it's very slow.  If it's not in the server, perhaps it's in the code being sent to our browsers.  Whatever it is, it's getting more and more frustrating, especially in the light of the new heavy handed moderation threats being thrown around.

Please understand that those of us affected can't just browse around and find stuff here.  If you want to get an idea of how it feels, try logging in with a 1200 baud modem and start browsing.

After reading through everyones responses I have a suspicion that the problems may be relating to a single server of ours.  The irc server also is home to a few other services which could impact the WinCustomize main site as well as the forums.  Though it doesn't make sense why some experience the problems and others do not.

I don't know if it's just a routing issue or some other problem.  I have brought this attention to others here to get some new ideas so hopefully something will come of that.

While I don't have any kind of an answer to provide at the moment, we are looking into the problem using the data you all have provided. Please continue to post any 'odd' diagnostic reports [you] may come up with.

(My post didn't go through so I'm reposting from my cache.  Please excuse the double post if both show up).

I'm coming through a proxy in Amsterdam now and it's not so bad.  This page render was 31.116 seconds and navigating is more tolerable.

I checked a few sites that might help narrow things down.  At least I hope it will. All sites were checked directly without a proxy.

The following two sites appeared to run normally...

impulsedriven.com

joeuser.com

The following two were slow (about 20 to 30 seconds to render a page)...

impulsedriven.net

forums.joeuser.com

The following three were very slow (30 seconds to 1 minute to render a page)...

forums.galciv2.com

(edit - It looks like it truncated my post.  Retrying..)

forums.stardock.com

wincustomize.com

I'm unaware of any other stardock sites.  I can check others if you'd like, but they'll need to be listed.

Same here, the forums are really slow. I have a 20mb/s connection and every other forum or website loads near instant, but these forums are taking anywhere from 30-60 seconds per click on a topic. Firefox's info bar basically says connecting/waiting for to scripts.stardock.com while it sits there. I am on the forums.demigodthegame.com just FYI.

For those of you using Firefox, I recommend the extended statusbar plugin, it will tell you how long and at what speed it takes to load a page.

Okay, I'm impressed by all of the routing data, interesting to know you can do this, are we using a specific program to accomplish these traces?

I just want to iterate that for me at least (and I'm fairly sure there have been a few others that have made similar comments) that this issue appeared pretty much instantaneously. Everything had been working perfectly normally and then suddenly in the Sunday to Monday timeframe (9/7 - 9/8) every page access slowed down to the 30-45 second range.

Clearly something changed but that probably doesn't really limit the scope. It could be an obscure hardware failure or it could even be related to Forum Update v1.6.3174.27495 which *I think* occured within this timeframe or a multitude of other things.

I don't know how feasible this is but has any thought been given to "rolling back" the recent forum changes merely as a test?

They're standard DOS commands.  Just open a DOS window and type PING, TRACERT or PATHPING a space and the destination (forums.stardock.com for example).  If you want to capture it in a text file, add another space and type >text.txt or whatever you care to name the file.  It'll show up in the path that you used to issue the command (C:\Windows\Profiles\Me for example.)

Hmm ... That's too bad I was hoping it was fixed. However I continue to see page load (and render) times on the order of 2 to 3 seconds when for the last 3 days it's been a very dependable 30 to 45 seconds.

My TRACERT data is virtually identical compared to when I was running slow.

I think this low level path stuff is a dead end. I see no difference between this and my previous posting yet before I was running 30-45 seconds per page now its 2-3 seconds.

I posted yesterday saying that it seemed to be fixed too after the forums sped up for at least 30 minutes.  I didn't want to claim a false victory a second time.  I deleted the post when, as if on cue, the forums went from 1.88 second renders to 30+ second renders right after my post.  It took over 10 minutes to delete the post.

It's back to being fast again for the time being.

Still fast for me consistently for the last 14 hours but I also am not declaring victory. Clearly while my access was fast others were slow. This just indicates the variablity of the problem. It also to some extent indicates that this is *not* a client side problem. I've gone from working fine to extreme slowdown and back again without a single hardware or software change to my PC. How can that indicate a problem with my PC, or anyone else's PC for that matter?
