Why The force awakens is as bad as the prequels

Don't read if you don't like spoilers.

When I first saw the new star wars movie, I had slightly warm feelings towards it, and considered it an ok action movie. But the more time I spent thinking about the film the more negative my opinions on it became. I have now concluded that the movie is as bad as the star wars prequels (most of them at least, episode 1 is probably still worse).

The biggest problems I had with the Star wars prequels are all of the plotholes and the stupid story. I know others also hate on them for having too much CGI but I think that's a fairly subjective opinion and I personally wasn't too bothered by it. For me the real problems were the characters and the plot. And in my opinion, the force awakens is just as bad in this regard. Here are just some examples of what I am talking about:

-The republic forms the resistance to combat the first order. But why? Can't the republic just fight the order as the republic? And speaking  of the republic, how does it even work? Is General Leia in control of it? Is it a democracy? And what about the first order? How powerful is this new empire? How do the politics in this world work? At least during the star wars prequels I understood the context in which all of the fighting was taking place. In this one I have no real clue.

-Rey takes a giant dump on everything we know about the force by becoming a super powerful jedi that can fly spaceships and beat someone in a lightsaber duel with no prior training and experience whatsoever. It appears that now being a good jedi has nothing to do with personal skill, just having the force turns you into superman! It took Luke Skywalker 3 movies to defeat Darth Vader, but Rey defeats Kylo in her first fight and nearly kills him. But then again, Kylo isn't actually as big a badass as Darth Vader, brings brings us to the next point...

-The new bad guy is pathetic. The actor playing him looks completely out of place and doesn't fit this role at all. He looks like he belongs in a teenage comedy. The actual character also acts more like a spoiled and a whiny brat rather than as an actual badass. The moment he took of his mask I could no longer take him seriously.

-Lots of pointless fan service. For no reason.

-The Starkiller base is extremely stupid. They could not come up with an original threat so they just created a new version of the Death star that is like 100x bigger (because the old death star was so small right?). In the original movies, the construction of the death star was hailed as a massive accomplishment. And that was in-spite of the fact that the empire had a whole galaxy worth of resources to build it with. How was the first order which is suppose to be merely a shadow of the old empire able to build something that is dozens of times bigger than the death star? This is a giant plothole so obvious it's painful. Oh! And it appears that they learned NOTHING from the first 2 death stars, because of course the good guys just need to destroy a single weak spot to kill it. Because screw being creative.

-How did Han Solo find the main characters so quickly after they left the planet? They just so happened to be nearby? The fact the Falcon had a tracking device on it doesn't explain how they could show up so quickly.

Those are just examples of SOME of the dumb things in this film.

The single most common excuse I hear for this film is that it's fun as an action film. But can't you also say that about the prequels? I honestly think the only reason people are saying this movie is way better than the prequels is because hating on the prequels has become a fad, "Oh yea, at least it isn't as bad as the prequels hurr dur".

Well, it really isn't much better honestly. I would even go as far as to say that episode 3 is better.

Do you share my sentiment?

Sounds like a great and honest review to me. The signature work of J.J. Not planning to fork up a lot of dosh to support more shallow affairs.

Dude, You need to get out more. You do know it's a movie right?. And as movies go they are works of fiction. So what if some things don't make sense. That's called Hollywood. It's always amuses me to see people taking this shit so bloody seriously. Sheeeesh it's a F%$#%^G movie, It's meant to be unrealistic and make no sense. Enjoy it for what it is.

In defense of HCG's review:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief

"An author's work, in other words, does not have to be realistic, only believable and internally consistent (see Magic A Is Magic A). When the author pushes an audience beyond what they're willing to accept, the work fails in the eyes of that particular audience. As far as science fiction is concerned, viewers are usually willing to go along with creative explanations which is why people don't criticize your wormhole travel system or how a shrinking potion doesn't violate the laws of matter conservation, but even in the more fantastical genres, suspension of disbelief can be broken when a work breaks its own established laws or asks the audience to put up with too many things that come off as contrived.

A common way of putting this is "You can ask an audience to believe the impossible, but not the improbable."

Personally, I like the new movie a lot. But I do have one nitpick that is right in line with your criticism here...

On the most recent Star Trek movie, JJ Abrams did a rehash of the old "Wrath of Khan" plot. That didn't sit well with me. Come up with a new plot.

On this latest Star Wars movie, he does what is essentially a rehash of the original Star Wars plot. The bad guys are looking for a droid that has plans on a desert planet. The bad guy has a helmet--but one that he apparently doesn't need (Darth Vader apparently needed his to breath...or maybe to hide his ugliness). And then the rebellion, with a small band of fighters takes out the massive planet killer weapon. Too much like the plot of Episode IV.

But still it didn't ruin it for me. For what it is, I think that the movie is well-made, entertaining and it has a nice pace. IMO this movie is worthy of the Star Wars saga. I only hope that Episode VIII takes us in a new direction not seen before.

The movie was a bit too "Star Wars: A New Hope For A New Generation" and I agree with the idea that if the Empire was defeated at Endor, isn't the Resistance now the Republic/Government?

Of course, there's been 30 years gone by so probably a hand wave or two going on or things will be explained in the next film.

Bearing in mind Lucasfilm said anything in the SWEU isn't regarded by them as machine gun (or is it cannon?), they could simply write in that, yes, the Empire was defeated at Endor and Resistance did for a time become the Government but it was split apart by infighting/Han and Leia's boy (being semi-Force powerful) running away from home, thumbing a ride from a passing First Order tie fighter and hey presto, The First Order is NOW DA BOSS OF DA GALAXY, BITCHES!! (No idea how old Kylo is meant to be, could be that the First Order only really started controlling things in the last few years). Note, his semi-Force powerfulness was enough because any one else at or above Kylo's level he killed or is exiled (a certain Uncle of his). Rey? Well, whatever, she was unaware of Kylo so didn't try and stop him/No one would bother with a scavanger who was Force-sensitive unless they presented themselves to another Force-sensitive (ie Luke and Ben, okay he was found by Ben but you get the idea).

Incidentally, why did they never think to train Leia just in case things went bad? Sexism in the Resistance?

Rey's Force skills would have been learned pre-TFA time (but post First Order control time as I state above) and who wants to see Son Of Yoda anyway?? And Andy Serkis was already taken doing another character...

All this predicated on, as I said, Lucasfilm merrily ignoring the supposed rules of the Expanded Universe.

Personally I enjoyed it. It was your typical Star Wars movie. All of them have plot holes the size of a Star Cruiser with mediocre character development. Empire was the best of them all. I think we now have an issue of nostalgic thinking and spoiled by better sci fi movies. Change your point of view and the movie was good.

Gamer dude, not so sure you're gonna make a lot of friends with this.

If you care about that then you have a problem because being honest with your feelings is way more important. Real friends don't hold it against you if you don't like a stupid movie.

The problem with Star Wars fans is that they are in to it way more than I can ever understand.

Someone told me not too long ago that I had to like Star Wars. That there must be something wrong with me if I didn't like it. I more or less said go to hell.

Star Wars' only 2 claims to fame was the use of a tracking camera to film a static model [instead of the other way round]....and THE MOST pretentious credits/intro text sequence ever.

Now Star Trek had 3...

The first 'inter-racial' kiss on US TV....

The invention of the 'expendable' away-team person/s you always KNEW were gonna snuff it...

...and  the high tech leaning of a camera one way....while all the cast rushed across set the other way.....

At least Doctor Who had rubber spiders....

I think Star Wars all went to poo about the time Yoda turned up.....[though I'd already pined for BETTER 'robots'....like Silent Running [or just about any other SF].

I do remember cringing ... way back then....

...and that sword fight in Ep 1 [?] ....even more absurd than that Jar Jar Binks thing.

Took my son to see the original in 1977 at age 3 (nearer 4 as I recall).  He's been a total Star Wars junkie ever since, seen every film, watch all the related stuff (Clone Wars, etc.), has tons of SW crap.

He saw Force Awakens with his younger brother and, as they described it, they weren't high-fivin each other on the way out.  Thought it was a 'good movie' but no raves.

Quoting Chasbo,

Sort of, but not quite.   Frankly, Star wars missed the mark after the 3rd installment.  From there on it became inane, inept, intolerable.  Frankly, I'd rather watch The Muppets In Outer Space.

There will of course be those who'll call me a hater, but that won't bother me in the slightest.  At the end of the day, my viewing preferences/habits are less likely to insult my intelligence.

There's even bedroom toys, nudge nudge wink wink.

It's a cash cow.
