MY Forum Issue

By on June 10, 2011 8:02:42 AM from WinCustomize Forums WinCustomize Forums

I think we're all basically adults here, right? But just in case, let me start by saying that this thread is NOT about slamming anyone. It's just some advice...from the heart...for anyone...and someone.

I believe that when folks post in the forums, whether noobs or veterans, the majority of the community responds in a positive manner. Yeah, we have a terrible habit of going off topic. Hard not to with so many overactive, overly creative, and talented folks around, However, in general, it's usually with love or good natured.

Yeah, you have a few who will react to something or anything in a negative manner. Again, for the most part, it's never hostile or meant to be mean.

One of the hardest things is determining the posters 'tone' which can be in itself difficult when you haven't had a lot of experience with that particular poster. Words are always open to interpretation. I could call Doc a f***tard and he knows it's an endearing nic meant with love, whereas if I called skinhit a f***tard, he knows that I am generally still hoping he catches a bad case of scabies or something.

All of this said...I am not sure who has it harder sometimes. The original poster, being misinterpreted, misunderstood, misquoted, etc., or the person replying going through the same. (Perhaps the mods have it the hardest trying just to keep up with the damn conversation and making sure we're all good little smurfs and smurfettes)

What I do know for sure is that this community behaves like one big fat disfunctional family a lot of the time. A lot of disagreement, a lot of wild observations, a lot of varied opinions, and also a lot of genuine concern and affection...love...no matter how it seems the words are coming out. Tons of support and devotion and some of the fiercest loyalty I have ever experienced.

All of this brings me to my point. And this is for everyone.

If you take the time, if you have the need to start a thread, whether something frivilous for fun or you need help or whatever...I would offer this advice.

Expect the best. (Cause we are)

Expect the worst. (Because it takes all kinds and that's what makes life interesting)

Embrace both. (You'll be better for it)

And don't delete your thread. Don't have your thread deleted or removed or whatever  because you think it's served it's purpose or because the comments didn't go your way or because you just want it gone or whatever. It can always help someone else down the road, whether it's a good laugh or some understanding of the site, community, or some technical piece of info they have been looking for. Beside it possibly serving a purpose to someone...anyone down the road...it can also discourage folks from even posting in your threads. Especially folks that want to support you, help you, admire you/your work/your efforts, etc.  Please remember this.

So, to sum up..

Expect.

Embrace.

Preserve.

I'm done.

Let the flaming begin.

In the words of the immortal Frank Barone...

"You my boy... are a girl!"

(and for those of you that don't get it... IT'S HUMOR! I'm sure Po gets it. )

We try to remain as "hands off" as possible and when we can't we'd rather work behind the scenes to avoid embarrassing any individual.

The use of smilies help to convey tone and avoid confusion.

I wish Lantec would use a smilie, 'cause I'm confused. Or maybe he did. I dunno anymore.

--> Poor doc.

As for you, Smedley?  I hate you.

Now where did I put that Photoshorts thing...

Seriously? Some threads get locked away because of TOS violations/spam, etc.

Oh yes... also because they're yours, Smedley.

What!  Me worry?    Yes, mixed bag here, and sometimes, some of us get passionate about things, but I can say that I have found most people here to be real people.  This means that a bit of disfunction (seasonings on  the tossed salad - a metephor for the forums, iof you please), are inevitable.  Is OK by me...    I, for one, have learned a great deal, even from "old" threads...

Yes, the Mods do have it the hardest...as it's their responsibility to keep the peace by interpreting just what 'may' have gone wrong...or not.

Almost always they are slammed for whatever action they take....or that they reacted too soon...or too late...or not at all.

To quote from some song/text/whatever....."walk a mile in my shoes".....

Truth of the matter...the longer you know someone the more accurate you can be at calling them arseholes...and the less offence they will take with you doing so..... but there will always be someone somewhere wishing to call you an arsehole who has yet to earn the right to be able to....

Well, I've sort of known you for several years now. I would'nt call you an asshole.. nope.. not me.. never . I might use it in a sentence about you, but I certainly wouldn't pick up the phone and "call you" about it!

If you get upset by what somebody says here you got a real problem. I get upset if my wife or kids or boss or the police man gives me a hard time. The police man says "You are under arrest", that catches my attention. Here, it's just a diversion.

You're all over arrest. Got to your rooms. After you deposit ten pennies to avoid being flushed.

It was the coldest winter ever.  Many animals died because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance them- selves one from the other but they began to die, alone and frozen.  So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together.  They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the warmth that came from the others. This way they were able to survive.  Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities.
