Pacovs excellent piece on Orb of Defiance inspired me to take stock of what I actually buy in game.  I cover a lot of ground here although only in slight detail. I’m wondering if people think I’m making any glaring omissions. Below is a complete list of the only items I ever buy with my comments on when and how often. Some of them are every game some are very rare. I get the impression that these items are the mainstay, and perhaps most Mids would have similar lists, but would value any feedback.

This post may be useful for complete noobs looking filter out what gear is mainstream, but I’m also looking for the Pros to tell me what omissions I’m making and where I’m using items wrong.

*Favor Items

Magical Coin Pouch

(any game set to Filthy Rich + High Gold)

Swift Anklet

(For Prison with Rook, or big maps like exile for other demis)

Blood of the Fallen

(If in doubt go BoTF, so most games)

Amulet of Teleportation

(For Crucible and Exile if I’m feeling lazy, use to use in Cata 1v1, but switch to HW for superior levelling. Although I do love the way it gives a slot back you otherwise use on TPs)

Poisoned Dagger

(For UB if I’m bored of BoTF)

Blade of the Serpent

(For TB on Cata against a medium team, where I think I might get left alone long enough to bring down towers solo, this item lets you do that early)

Staff of Renewal

(Occasionally with Reg, although I find HW gets me more kills)

Heaven's Wrath

(almost always for Reg, gets loads of kills when snipe is just not enough, also ESSENTIAL for levelling if your too weak to risk the front line. Also any other Assassin on 1v1 for the need to level on two creep lanes at once.)

**Never buy any other items, never buy any General items. Almost always get BoTF on generals

*Breastplates

Scalemail

(With Rook against a strong team or another Rook I buy this with Banded + BoTF, otherwise don’t bother unless I happen to be back at the shop early game with 400 gold to spare)

Banded Armor

(every game with assassin at start, get on Generals if happen to be back at shop early, otherwise stay in lane and buy at the same time as Vlemish)

Nimoth Chest Armor

(Every game for assassin)

Hauberk of Life

(Every Game for General)

Armor of Vengeance

(With Rook most games while going after towers, or against Erb/Oak Minions on other demis)

God Plate

(Actually buy very few games, just don’t have chance as gold is better spent on Citadel upgrades or locks/sigils, but love to on Generals if I can)

*Helms

Scaled Helm

(Every Game)

Plenor Battlecrown

(Every games to replace Scaled, AFTER Vlemish has been bought)

Vlemish Faceguard

(Every game)

Hungarling's Crown

(Occasionally to replace Vlemish, although there is not usually a need, on Some Assasins to replace Vlemish+Plenor to get free slot back)

*Boots

Boots of Speed

(Crucial in mirror games to out speed your mirror character, you can chase them down or run, but generally don’t bother in mixed matches)

Unbreakable Boots

(A typical early purchase if I’m getting pushed off flags alot early game, other I just wait and  get Vlemish+ Nimoth)

Journeyman Treads

(Kick-Ass end game portal ninja  item, don’t buy as much as I know I should)

*Gloves

Slayer's Wraps

(with Reg every games, other Assassin sometimes too)

**Never bothered with any other gloves

*Trinkets

Narmoth's Ring

(Must have for assassins, especially Rook, Nice enough for Generals)

**Aware for Rook there is a 3% lifesteal ring, but prefer to wait for narmoths, is that a mistake?

*Artifacts

Orb of Veiled Storms

(Sedan, when possible)

Girdle of the Giants + Bulwark of the Ages

(Very Occasionally, normally by the time I can afford this the gold is going up so fast I just hang on until Ashkandor)

Ashkandor

(about one in 50 games)

All Father's Ring Edit

(Not unless we start on Filthy Rich, almost never see in normal games)

*Idols

Siege Demolisher Idol

(never bother with other archers, only 2050 and you get that end of early game for Generals, right after getting Vlemish)

Monk Idols

(First purchase on any General, unless I am the second General in which case I wander around a bit and go back for Clerics)

Cleric Idol

(see above)

Bishop Idol

(end game, after selling monks/Clerics, unless other General has Bishops, in which case HPs)

*Consumables

Totem of Revelation

(every game at start with Generals, love pick up a little later with Assassin, just for extra sight, react before your enemy’s, hold until i need the slot back)

Scroll of Teleporting

(try to keep one early games as soon as possible, end game always have 3)

Capture Lock

(end game keep 3)

Sigil of Vitality

(Get 1 mid game, then keep 3 end game)

Combat Health Potion

(Reg early game)

Combat Mana Potion

(Against Reg at start otherwise wait at some point early game)

Equipment

Breastplates Edit

Breastplates are items that specialize in increasing your strength. They will usually increase your Health and Armor but sometimes also your weapon damage or attack rate.

Data correct for Breastplates as of December 7th 2009; Demigod 1.2.0

Scalemail Edit

Cost: 400 Gold

+600 Armor

A good item, at the very beginning. At 400 gold, you get 600 Armor, which is enough for 20% damage reduction. However, as the game progresses, not only will this item take up a slot, but the diminishing return on the armor stat will make this item pretty useless.

Banded Armor Edit

Cost: 550 Gold

+400 Health

+5 Health Per Second

An excellent first item. This should almost always be your first item regardless of demigod.

Nimoth Chest Armor Edit

Cost: 1500 Gold

+500 Health

+750 Armor

A good defensive item. Will grant you extra Health and Armor. Well priced for the stats boost.

Hauberk of Life Edit

Cost: 1750 Gold

+600 Health

+10 Health Per Second

+200 Minion Health

+3 Minion Health Per Second

If you are not a general, then you will get a better bang for your buck with the Nimoth Chest Armor or the Unbreakable Boots. If you are a general though, then this item is pretty good.

Duelist's Cuirass Edit

Cost: 2500 Gold

+350 Armor

+500 Health

10% chance deal a critical strike for 1.5x damage.

An OK item if you Demigod is getting most of it's damage from auto-attacks. So mostly only for Rook and Unclean Beast. This item increases your overall damage output by 5%.

Armor of Vengeance Edit

Cost: 3250 Gold

+1050 Armor

When struck by melee and ranged attacks, wearers of this mystical armor reflect 35 damage back to the attacker.

A good item that grants a fair amount of armor. The returned damage is not huge, but enough to make a difference in combat. It also triggers very frequently against minions, towers, and just about everything.

Platemail of the Crusader Edit

Cost: 4500 Gold

+20 Health Per Second

+1000 Armor

+250 Minion Health

+4 Minion Health Per Second

1% chance on being hit to heal 300 Health

The healing on this item is nice, but too rare. It would be a good item, but not at 4500 gold.

Groffling Warplate Edit

Cost: 5200 Gold

+675 Health

+1200 Armor

1% chance on being hit to gain a shield that absorbs 300 damage and lasts 10 seconds.

Only one absorption effect may be active at a time

God Plate Edit

Cost: 10000 Gold

+1050 Health

+1200 Armor

+20 Health Per Second

+275 Minion Health

+300 Minion Armor

Helms Edit

Helms are items that specialize in abilities. They usually provide Mana and Mana regeneration boosts, as well as usefull auras or decreased cooldowns.

Data correct for Helms as of January 13th 2010; Demigod 1.2.0

Scaled Helm Edit

Cost: 550 Gold

+525 Mana

+4 Mana Per Second

An excellent starting item, especially for Demigods like the Unclean Beast or the Rook, who have a low starting amount of Mana.

Plate Visor Edit

Cost: 600 Gold

+35% Mana Per Second

A subpar item. Scaled helm usually generates more mana, increases your mana pool, and costs less. The only exception is Leviathan, which has some crazy high mana regeneration flags.

Plenor Battlecrown Edit

Cost: 1500 Gold

+1575 Mana

+70% Mana Per Second

An excellent helm, but should always be bought after Vlemish Faceguard.

Vlemish Faceguard  Edit

Cost: 1750 Gold

+1050 Mana

+11 Mana Per Second

+4 Mana Per Second Aura

Range: 20

Theurgist's Cap Edit

Cost: 2000 Gold

+10 Health Per Second

+35% Mana Per Second

+200 Minion Health

+3 Minion Health Per Second

5% chance on being hit to reduce the target's Health Per Second by 50% and Mana Per Second by 50% for 10 seconds.

Vinling Helmet  Edit

Cost: 3300 Gold

+1050 Mana

+70% Mana Per Second

3% chance on being hit to restore 350 mana.

The second-most expensive Helm item available, the Vinling Helmet increases a Demigod's Mana and Mana Regeneration by a considerable amount. However, the less expensive Plenor Battlecrown provides a superior amount of Mana and the amount of Mana Regeneration, thus the proc effect accounts for the extra 1800 Gold.

Unless the proc proves especially useful, the Vlemish Faceguard is likely a superior Helm.

Hungarling's Crown  Edit

Cost: 5500 Gold

+700 Mana

+18 Mana Per Second

-25% Mana Cost Aura

range 20

Hands down one of the best mana items in the game. This helm will reduce the cost of all your skill, as well as your close allies, and will boost your mana regeneration.

Boots Edit

Boots in Demigod are a category of Items that increase your survivability. Their primary function is to increase your movement speed or evasion, but more often than not, they will give you HP and Mana boosts.

Data correct for Boots as of December 7th 2009; Demigod 1.2.0

Footman's Sabatons Edit

Cost: 600 Gold

+200 Health

+260 Mana

A sub par item, Even for 600 Gold. For 550 Gold, Banded Armor will give you 400 Health with 5 Health per second, and Scaled Helm 525 Mana, plus 4 Mana per second. Overall, you get slightly less stats per gold, and no regeneration. You only excuse for buying these boots is if you have already bought the above two items.

Boots of Speed Edit

Cost: 1000 Gold

+10% Movement Speed

(Not mentioned) Your minions get the same movement speed bonuses.

One of the most bought boots. This item does nothing else than boost your speed. Very useful to chase down and kill a fleeing demigod or to flee yourself.

Unbreakable Boots Edit

Cost: 1500 Gold

+600 Health

+5 Health Per Second

+800 Mana

An excellent item that will give you a great bang for your buck. Not too expensive, so it can be acquired early in the game. The Health and Regeneration will increase your survivability, whereas the added Mana will keep you in the field for longer.

Assassin's Footguards Edit

Cost: 1750 Gold

+5% Attack Speed

+10% Dodge

Ironwalkers Edit

Cost: 2750 Gold

+3 Minion Health Per Second

+275 Minion Armor

Whenever Movement Speed is under 5.5, Armor is increased by 1000.

Desperate Boots Edit

Cost: 4000 Gold

+400 Health

+350 Mana

Whenever health is under 30%, Dodge is increased by 20%.

Journeyman Treads Edit

Cost: 6750 Gold

+400 Health

15% Movement Speed

5% chance on being hit to increase Movement Speed by 50% for 10 seconds.

(Not mentioned) Your minions get the same movement speed bonuses.

Journeyman's Thread is the end-all movement speed item by excellence. The added movement speed almost always triggers when in combat, giving you an absolutely un-matched speed. It is, however expensive and provides no other benefit than speed. It doesn't help cover long distances too much, as combat is required to trigger the extra speed.

Gloves Edit

Gloves specialize in combat abilities. They usually increase Damage and Attack speed, sometimes add Critical chances, or added special attacks.

Data correct for Gloves as of December 7th 2009; Demigod 1.2.0

Gauntlets of Brutality Edit

Cost: 400 Gold

+25 Weapon Damage

Gladiator Gloves Edit

Cost: 450 Gold

+5% Attack Speed

+4 Minion Damage

Wyrmskin Handguards Edit

Cost: 1500 Gold

+15 Weapon Damage

15% chance on hit to eviscerate the target dealing 60 damage and reducing their Attack Speed and Movement Speed 15%.

Note: Duration of eviscerate is 5 seconds.

Note: Ranged attacks only get 8% chance to eviscerate.

Gauntlets of Despair Edit

Cost: 1750 Gold

+350 Mana

15% chance on hit to drain 300 Mana.

Note: Ranged attacks only get 10% chance to eviscerate.

This item originally also added an increase 8% rate of fire, but not anymore.

Slayer's Wraps Edit

Cost: 3300 Gold

+10 Health Per Second

+30 Weapon Damage

10% chance deal a critical strike for 2x damage.

Gloves of Fell-Darkur Edit

Cost: 3500 Gold

+30 Weapon Damage

+8 Minion Damage

+5% Minion Attack Speed

20% chance on hit to unleash a fiery blast, dealing 175 damage.

Note: Ranged attacks only get 13% chance to unleash a fiery blast.

Doomspite Grips Edit

Cost: 6750 Gold

+40 Weapon Damage

+10% Attack Speed

25% chance on hit to perform a cleaving attack, damaging nearby enemies.

Note: Ranged attacks only get 16% chance to perform a cleaving attack.

Trinkets Edit

Trinkets are the "various" category of items in demigod. They can boost any of your stats, and more often than not, give you an ability you can use for free repeatedly, but you still have to wait for the cool down.

It is very important to understand that trinkets that have an ability will occupy an item slot and not an equipment slot.

Depending on the length of the game, artifacts can be key components in solidifying one team's victory due to their immense stat boosts and special abilities. However artifacts are only accessible through an artifact shop at a contested flag on every map except Exile, so constant watch over that flag later in the game is essential to ensure your opponents are not getting artifacts to aid them.

Potions Edit

Items that are consumed when used.

Potions in Demigod are items that give you back health, mana, or both. These potions are generally divided in several kinds of groups.

Combat and Enhanced potions only restore a bit of your attributes, can can be used very quickly. Robust and Supreme health potions restore you much much more, but take more time to cast. These are usually less safe to use in battle, as you might get killed/interrupted before using them. On the other hand, they give you much more for your gold.

Mana Potions will restore your mana, Health Potions will restore your health, and Rejuvenation/Revitalization Potions will restore both.

Regardless of potion type, they can always only be used on yourself, can come with an 8 second cooldown time. Like all usable items, their use requires 0 mana.

Favor Items that can occasionally be useful in skilled matches:

*Symbol of Purity: for pure Ooze UB while laning vs a BotS UB; for Sed in Sedna mirrors -- it's the only non-silenceable effect in game.

*Cape of Plentiful Mana: for Sed/QoT on Leviathan or while laning with a Staff of Renewal Tower Rook.

*Staff of the Warmage: for Erb, if I risk to go mana-heavy ppapanek's Mist build.

*Cloak of Night: for Sedna Pounce builds; for Occ's double hit Blast Off builds.

*Mard's Hammer: for pure Ice TB relying early-mid game on AA, in combination with Gloves of Brutality and Frozen Heart's natural +75 damage bonus it makes a huge difference.

Armor:

*Grofflings Plate: well worth the investment, I usually don't bother with Godplate at all.

Gloves:

*Gloves of Brutality: an extra-cheap early game damage-booster, occasionally useful.

Trinkets:

*Nature's Reckoning: can be a good addition to Sedna's arsenal.

*Magus Rod: great on Occ and, in some cases, on QoT.

*Orb of Defiance: well, yeah.

Artifacts:

*Mage Slayer: for Erb life-steal builds (Narmoth's+MS+Vampiric Aura = 30% life steal at lvl 15); for UB.

*Cloak of Flames: for Sedna, if I see I can drop locks/sigils.

*Girdle of Giants: very good for Sedna and quite nice on Erb life-steal builds.

Consumables:

*Universal Gadget: early game kills, esp. vs late BotF whores; healing towers when teammates are unable to protect them, noobs, idiots, ffs!

Yes, and a lot of people, not necessarily super-noob, accused me of cheating when I've "helaed towers". It's not a very cost-efficient practice, but sometimes it can give you an edge, especially with tower strength set to High.

*Staff of the Warmage: for Erb, if I risk to go mana-heavy ppapanek's Mist build.

I've actually been toying around with some minion dodge builds lately catering to erb specifically.  I use:

Pendant of Grace:  Cost: 950 Favor +10% Dodge +15% Minion Dodge

And stack that with assassins foot guards (1750 gold) +5% attack speed and 10% dodge.

I've mostly just been toying with some dodge builds as the cap is 40% and I really don't think anyone out there has a good dodge build (not to say that I do - still working on it).  That said, 10% minion dodge when you are spamming minions and have hauberk means alot - and as erb doesn't need to speed any mana to get those little guys.

Universal Gadget can heal towers?!?!?!?!?!?

Yeah - like in1 said, it can be useful on high towers, but at 500 gold a pop, best to make sure you are using it well.  The main thing is for saving the citadel, though.  I think cow had an epic game awhile back where his team won by spamming heals on their citadel.

Staff of Renewal - (Occasionally with Reg, although I find HW gets me more kills)

Heaven's Wrath - (almost always for Reg, gets loads of kills when snipe is just not enough, also ESSENTIAL for levelling if your too weak to risk the front line. Also any other Assassin on 1v1 for the need to level on two creep lanes at once.)

I used to play this way, but I'm pretty much using staff of renewal nonstop now.  Sure, I can take a peak into the fog of war and catch someone off guard with hw,.. or - I can spam snipes over and over, drop mines faster, etc.  I find I get MUCH more bang for my buck with staff.

As mentioned, i agree with the when in doubt BotF, especially with assasians and specifically with TB.

For reg i use, and only use the Blade of the Seprent. I stack attack speed and DPS with reg and with Angelic Fury your mana can drain quite fast. With the Blade i find i am rarely oom. Best thing is it allows you to never buy a help, freeing a slot up for another chestplate.

With UB, again the blade is a fine choice, but i like BotF, especially on prison. Take that with the two cheap chestplates and ooze and you can survive to chase down for that early kill.

What would you guys say is the best Erb favor item? I have been using the ring, but wondered what new strats have been developed in the last 12months.

I think there was a guide to a erebus dodge build made a long time ago by horseradish? Anyway I would love to see the dodge cap and the attack speed cap removed for a greater diversity in builds. Maybe dodge would compete with hp stack builds?

Quoting OMG_ZEX,

Well, here's the thing about dodge - even on filthy rich games, you can only go so high.  All fathers gives u 10%.  the 12,000 item (name eludes me) give you 15%.   Assassins footguards gives you 10%.  And the only other buff I can think of either comes from abilities (da or erb at level 15) or the pendant of grace (10%).  So, the only dgs that could actually exceed the existing cap are da and erb (da in normal games, erb in rich games).  There are the desperate boots (3750) that would put many over the cap, but require low hp to be useful.

I actually hate dodge.  Strange for a guy trying to come up with a good build for it, but I do.  Dodge ends up being a random result in combat.  Eg, I'm rolling the dice if I'm counting on it for save.  Granted, the higher the value, the less likely I will take damage, but I really don't like the random aspect as it reduces precision in kills, escapes, etc.  Heh... and that said, the random variable is fun.

What would you guys say is the best Erb favor item? I have been using the ring, but wondered what new strats have been developed in the last 12months.

I've played erb with ank of speed (I don't recommend, but its a fun change up), but I generally stick with botf (ignoring my comments re: pendant of grace).

And the only other buff I can think of either comes from abilities (da or erb at level 15) or the pendant of grace (10%).

There is also a very rarely used Sedna's lvl 15 Inspiring Roar (Pounce tree ultimate), that gives +15% dodge to her minions. If you go Pounce-spamming build with max MP, you can easlily have it as a semi-permanent buff.

yeah... that's a fair addition, of course, but I have never seen a practical application (still waiting on the viable yetti build )  That, with pendant would give sedna's minions a 30% dodge, which would be HUGE on an oak or erb, but no so awesome on a sed.  All the same, thanks for bringing up something I missed.

I sort of wonder if Reg is a special case in terms of gear? Reason being is that the way I play me Reg is to first off tell my team not to buy anything from the citadel until End Game.

I buy: FS1, Curr1, XP1, Curr2, FS2, Curr3, Priests, Angels, by this point the rest of the team can chip in.

I only buy gear for myself if I don’t yet have warscore to buy the next upgrade or its not time yet as in case of say Priests.

Maybe I am gimping myself? But I see my role as someone who is running between either side, constantly sniping, even if just to weaken a player, and maintaining the middle flag, and using your mines to build mine nests around the middle and in front of towers to net a few more kills. But as your using your gold on the Citadel primarily you can be rather weak, and under geared compared to the other denims in the game.

That said, if the other team makes mistake, you will be getting either an assist or a kill, every time another demigod goes down so the gold pours in. However, against a good team will not get a kill often, even with a reg, they will just concede the flag and hang back knowing that they face a 400/550 hp debuff every dozen seconds or so.

I know what your saying Pacov, but since Reg is not a front line character do you not find you can spend too much time out of lane, either capping the middle or running across the middle to snipe support. As a result a Reg without HW is in danger of under levelling, which can be crippling end game.

Nah - even without hw, I don't have much of a problem level.  It does require that you intentionally get your butt in a lane from time to time, but the ability to snipe over and over at a faster pace is huge.  Also, I'd rather level a little more slowly and have my teammates level up faster.

Anyway, my current reg spam snipe build starts with scaled helm + 1 mana pot + staff of renewal.  Go up and snipe a tower quick if u like, then run back to base and reload your mana.  While still at the crystal, at least 1 of your teammates will be at mid.  Snipe whatever enemy shows up.  Recharge, and head out.  I typically ask someone on the team to buy fs1, but then I purchase everything else after that.  The reason for this is that I want a 2nd helm asap so I can continue to spam abilities.  I typically get 1-snipe1, 2-mines1, 3-save, 4-snipe2/mines2, tracker (to increase the threat as I've likely been abusing 1 dg in particular over and over if I haven't already nailed a kill) or mark.  And so on.  The downside to this style of play is that you generally dnt find me on the front line as I have low hp for a bit.  The plus side is that I can and will keep firing snipes over and over to help my team push/kill.
