Steam Christmas Sale

By on December 20, 2010 2:08:13 PM from Sins of a Solar Empire Forums Sins of a Solar Empire Forums

Yeah, yeah, this is a Stardock forum and we all hate Steam, blah blah...

Anyway, lots of specials like last year for those who have been on the fence about various titles.  Most titles on the site are 10-90% off.

Some notable stuff today:

Super Meat Boy $3.75 (why isn't this game on Impulse at all?!)

Various Indie Game packs for $5 each (5 games per pack)

CivIV Complete $6.25(!)

Evil Genius $1.50

Serious Sam HD 1&2 $7.50

Valve Complete Pack $25

And this is day 1.  I'd love to support Impulse here, but the total Christmas sale they've had this month so far has sucked compared to one day of Steam offers.

Well gee, I guess if we're comparing companies' non-game development/publishing activities that might be somehow relevant. But we aren't It's not like SD doesn't try to do its own share of cash milking by using a subscription model for Object Desktop, download limits on Wincustomize without a premium account, and charging for premium skins (of course, in many cases the premium skins come from users and not SD). If you consider that, at least the silly toys are a 100% optional accessory, unlike having to re-buy OD every year to keep getting updates for it, and having to sub to WC if you want to download lots of skins! And you're against Valve because they make.. toys?

Are you kidding??  I'm never against any toy company.

You simply cannot have happy lil' children without the toy companies.

I can't imagine a world without those toys, really.

Here ya go!  --->  --> -> swooshs . .  .   .    (it's on the house!!)

I wish Puzzle Quest would go for cheap at Impulse. I'm really itching right now...it's unbearable!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/47540/ <-- Puzzle Quest II for 6$. Nevermind that I bought it for 9$ a month and haven't played it yet...*grumbles*

I also got screwed today by missing Defence Grid since I didn't understand how the daily deals work....I thought everything that was discounted was a daily sale....then when I checked now I saw that it was discounted by 50% instead of 80% before!!

Well, you never stop learning things....

December 22, 2010 11:27:27 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

I missed the Puzzle Quest and Defence Grid one as well. Right now, all I'm eyeing are the indies. I love indies. Also UNREAL DEAL. *drool*

Can Impulse have an Unreal Deal too? Just like for an hour or so?

December 23, 2010 12:51:50 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

yeah - the deals today are not as good.

December 23, 2010 12:52:00 AM from Elemental Forums Elemental Forums

If you haven't played it, I would strongly recomend the original puzzle quest over puzzle quest 2. Puzzle quest 2 is nowhere close to being as good.

oh and I agree.  Puzzle quest 1 = addictive for a bit.  Puzzle quest 2 = i played it for 6 hours and haven't been back.  My example only, ofc.

Puzzle Quest 2 has quite a few problems, but the worst is that the it's not even remotely challenging for most of the game. This is largely due to the fact that the AI is completey incompetent and just does things at random. There were a few challenging fights at low level, after that everything was mind numbingly trivial.

It's worse then puzzle quest 1 in quite a few other ways, but the one thing I will give it credit for is that the character design and powers you get are reasonably interesting and better balanced then puzzle quest 1. This would have made it pretty fun if you ever actually fought against anything that fought back.

Impulse's lined up publisher catalogs finally went up. While Ubisoft's offers are this year's Hall of Shamers, there seems to be a bit of good games on Paradox' side. I finally grabbed Grand Ages Rome Gold and two other games. 3 games for 20 bucks. Steam got me 15 games for 25 bucks.

I guess that's enough shopping for me, unless Impulse shells out the Unreal package again on a good discount.

I missed the Puzzle Quest 1 sale, and Puzzle Quest 2 doesn't seem interesting to me yet. Besides, PQ1 is sure to run on my aging PC.

December 23, 2010 7:42:56 AM from Elemental Forums Elemental Forums

I got CIV IV complete and Elven Legacy at Gamersgate.

I think the problem here (for the sellers) is that we as consumers gets used to getting a great game for a few bucks. When I buy CIV IV complete for 6 Euros I find it harder to buy a new game for 50 Euros. There are always a great number of games on sale, why buy anything at release? A lot of games are pretty useless until patched a few times anyways (will not name names, will not...)

December 23, 2010 11:19:26 AM from Elemental Forums Elemental Forums

Depending on the popularity of the game, those big sales might not come for a long time. A lot of people don't want to wait another year for the game they've really really wanted for a long time because it might have a sale. I would guess the majority of gamers still buy a lot of games at release or shortly after, before the sales start. The sales are for the "oh I'm kinda curious about this game and it's cheap so why not" crowd, more than anyone else.

The only appeal I can see to buying a game within the first month of release is that:

-The multiplayer population will generally be at its strongest then.  This is particularly important with co-op games.

-The competitive playing field will be level and diverse.  Everyone is still learning the game, there's generally still lots of experimentation with tactics and strategies.

-If the developers are good ones that actually listen to the concerns of the community, this is best time to get your feedback in to try and improve things while there's still a patching budget.

-Initial sales impact budget for patching.  If a flawed gem of a game does poorly on release, it may never get the polish it needs.  Not saying people should buy broken games BTW, just saying this is how it works.

December 23, 2010 6:10:34 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

today is a wee bit better.  Deathspank for $7 or so and darksiders for $10.

Yeah Darksiders 75% off! I was this close to buying it for full price a few days ago...

Seems like a better deal, getting Civ IV full for 6 buck instead of 50$ for Civ V.  And Civ III full is on for $3.  Which one's better? IV or III?

December 24, 2010 4:00:08 PM from Elemental Forums Elemental Forums

I liked III better, but I never stuck around on IV long enough to appreciate the expansions.   Apparently IV got better over time.   On III you spend a lot of your time micro'ing all of your workers.    And too much of the game rides on getting your first great leader.
