Forum Update - April 21, 2010 - Timezones, 24 hour clocks, quick options, and more

By on April 21, 2010 4:04:34 PM from Stardock Forums Stardock Forums

Hello everyone,

Another update this month, this time to add a few much-requested features.  See the change log below for details.

Note: If you notice any of the below features are not available or not working properly, please do a hard refresh (hold CTRL and press F5) to retrieve the latest javascript and css files.

1. Timezones!

An oft-requested feature is the ability to set a timezone.  You can do so in your My Account page under Options.  You can also set it in the quick options menu (see item 3 below for more details on what this is).

The default timezone is Eastern time, which is where Stardock is located.

2. 24 Hour Clock option

This option allows you to set all of the times in the forums to either a 12-hour clock (with AM/PM) or a 24-hour clock.

3. Quick Options menu

After implementing the flatten categories option, we realized that not many people know that we even have an options page.  The problem is because the options are buried under a couple links and aren't exactly easy to find.  The solution was to add a quick options dropdown menu in a place that people will see.  This dropdown menu is located below the forum search.

Click on it and select an option to immediately change it or view a page explaining what it is (depending on the option).

"Switch to 24-Hour Clock" will immediately switch your clock (you can change it back to 12-hour by clicking on the option again). "Flatten Forum Categories" and "Change Timezone" will redirect you to pages explaining what they do:

4. Other minor changes and bug fixes

The only other visual change is a link at the top of the page for the Recent Posts list:

Note: If you notice any of the above features are not available or not working properly, please do a hard refresh (hold CTRL and press F5) to retrieve the latest javascript and css files.

As always, if you notice any bugs or problems, please let me know by posting in the Forum Issues forum or contacting me via PM.

I guess you could call it a focus tool gmc2.  So you can concentrate on a particular subject.  Basically a tech tree in the direction you point it.

I enabled this feature and didn't see any difference and while I'm still not sure I understand, it seems like it could be a good thing. I'll play with it some more. new things to learn.

I didn't do anything to resolve your issues.  I'm going to have one of our QA guys try and reproduce it.

I'm also going to try a few new things to resolve the "posts/edits won't show up immediately" issue, but theres no guarantee that what I do will fix it.

Probably not caused by this update but recently I've been having trouble reading new posts:

I'll open the post because I see somebody has responded.

but when I get there on the last page, I see only what was there the last time I looked at it.

I have to go back and forth between my replies and the thread 3+ times to get the new post.

Just wasn't sure where to post that, and this seemed a fair place.

That bug has been around for quite some time.

Storm: Yeah, thats the old bug in the forums that everyone has got, but GunslingerBara is working on it, and may (hopefully) find a fix to it.

*fingers crossed*

Meh.  I've only recently been having a problem with it.  (Occasionally happened in the past, but not 80% of the posts like it is for m now.)

Maybe look closely at the code that was changed in the past two patches and it will be found?

Thanks morph.  Missed that post.  I guess I'm just confused as to why it's happening more often now than it used to.

The issue seems to be somewhat related to server load.  That is, the more people posting, the more confused the forums seem to get about when they posted.  It's still largely due to the cache, but the issue may not be as straight-forward as I thought it might (eg, force the cache to update after every post)...

*sigh* Back to the drawing board...
