It’s time to name the currency in Elemental.

The Random House team has come up with rigma which we like a lot.

An alternative would be gildars.

But if someone has a really cool name we’ll consider it.

How about one name for each faction, and the option to call it whatever you want if you design your own?

Gildar is lokks like gil. In FF. I don't like it.

Rigma is ok.

Why not some name related to elemental fluff ? Is there some word for "shard" in elemental lore ?

Shardii ? Risharda ?

Rigma? Sounds weird to be honest...

Quoting vieuxchat,

Sounds arabic or something like that.

Gildar sounds ok for a fantasy game imo.

Rigma sounds like something you would find in a sci-fi game like GalCiv. Gildars sounds a lot more fantasy.

I like the Rigma, but I thought you swore you weren't going to have a named currency.  Is the plural of Rigma Rigmar?

For example, The value of the Rigma fell against the Euro today. Now one Euro is worth sixty Rigmar.

Zorkmids!  No, seriously...

How about aurum?  It's latin for gold....

Idk, I'd be happy with plain ol' gold personally.

Rubar?  Uhm.. that's all I've got.

Unfortunately, Gildar is also very close to Gilder, a dutch coin (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gilder).  How about reversing them for Amgir or Redlig?

I would like to throw out the idea of a Spinto or Spintos.  I like Rigma as well.

Klute.  Plural would be Klutes.

[edit]  I agree with the point that it makes more sense for different nations to have different currencies, at least for the fiction of the game.  From the programming/gaming aspect, a single currency is definitely the way to go, unless of course, you want to add currency trading to the economy part of the game (a bad idea, IMO).

I really don't like rigma, better go with Gildar or Thaler or Ducats. Better suited for a fantasy game in my opinion. Agree with Vessol there, Rigma sounds more futuristic/Sci-Fi.

I really don't like rigma. It just sounds wrong. Gildars sounds good though.

Ort is a synonym for shard, with the meaning of "a scrap or morsel of food left at a meal" (middle age -- 1400s, possibly Dutch).

Not saying I like it, but it's not reminiscent of a rl monetary unit (that I could find), has a medieval origin, a shard tie-in, and the food tie-in -- a monetary unit name derived from something as important as food is logical.

If we're considering Gildars, we should also consider Florins.  (Both were Dutch currencies, and both were also used for the names of kingdoms in The Princess Bride. )

While Gildar does bring flashes of Gil and Guilders to mind, it certainly does fit a fantasy setting better than Rigma.  Rigma is a good, creative, otherwise unnassociated name - but it doesn't roll of the tongue the way we've come to expect from fantasy games.  I think that's part of where the sci-fi association is coming from - at least for me.

Of the two, I vote Gildar.

Other ideas:

bit(s), venale(s), aurum(i), auric(s)

What's wrong with Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinium etc?

Most people who plays RPGs can relate to those. While most of the fanboys here will claim it's not original,  I'd like to point out that, giving it some bizarre name gives the game no extra value at all. Players dont care, so most companies stick with what people are familiar with. I think you should too.

Elinium?

Otherwise the fact "Rigma" is two syllables and only five letters, is a good thing to me. Ironically, I just contradicted my outlook with my suggestion hehe.

I think we could find something equal or better sounding and meaningful than Rigma, but Random House made a good choice. If we can't find another name, keep Rigma.

I do agree with AmericanPianist though, Gildar flows better thna Rigma. I'd rather not associate anything from Final Fantasy with Elemental just for bounadries sake mentioning it, but its a great name. Rigma though feels like it is far more relevant to the title Elemental than Gildar. Gildar sounds more medieval and renassiance-esque to me.
