"FPS"-type Game Suggestions

Help Please

So, I am considering buying some new games through Impulse. I already know that I am going to obtain Evochron Legends and Light of Altair; my budget for this expenditure is a maximum of US$75. With EL&LoA, I am currently at ~US$40 expenditure. I wish to have between US$7-US$10 leftover for tax.

My criteria for these games are- SP replayability- I want to be able to keep playing the SP for a LONG time. Gore-factor- I actually do not like excessive blood/gore in games. It is just disgusting (I don't feel physically sick from it BTW). If I can adjust the video settings or even a separate "gore" setting to dumb down the gore in a game that has an excess of it, I'm gold.

The final criterion- it must run smoothly on at least all low settings, 1024x768 resolution, on these specs- Vista-X64 w/ Dual-Core 2.1GHz processor, 4GB RAM. Preferably it should run on all/mostly medium settings. Being capable of running at a 1366x768 screen resolution is also a highly preferred option.

These are the FPS-type games I am considering purchasing-

Crysis- it looks interesting. Especially the whole "end up fighting in a microgravity environment" at the end thing.

STALKER:Shadow of Chernobyl- also an interesting looking title. I have found a good amount of info and consider this to be one of the biggest contendors.

Unreal Tournament 3- mostly because of the extensive modding capability. Especially because one particular mod, "Angels Fall First:Planetstorm" looks like the ultimate FPS game for me.

TimeShift- I am thinking about this one, but am unsure of it.

These are my alternate, non-FPS choices. The same criteria described above still apply.

PURE- very interesting looking RTS.

GalCivI:Ultimate- the predecessor to GalCivII. Mostly because it is cheaper (25% the price of GalCivII:Ultimate).

Hacker Evolution:Untold- an "action" game revolving around "hacking" to clear the protaganist's name. It looks very interesting, and I like the premise.

Reaktor- a puzzle game where one must clear nuclear reactor cores of contamination.

So, what is your advice?

STALKER: booth SoC and CS will do you just fine. Replayabilaty is awesoem with mods that make the game 5 times better in general.

Hell no to crysis. The graphics on medium compare to Far Cry 2 on high, but the writing is absolutely terrible. The beginning is horribly cheesy and it doesn't get any better. There is no replayability, and the microgravity thing was pretty sad. Basically you just float around. There's no recoil whatsoever.

I've never played Far Cry 2. But if there is no replayability (and the microgravity appears to have no Newtonian physics implemented at ALL), then I guess its out.

One note though- using a firearm in a microgravity environment WILL impart a rotational force to you (maybe/maybe not, depends on what position the weapon is held in), however depending on the weapon it will be so little as to be unnoticeable (a .45 ACP (Colt M-1911A1 equivalent) handgun will impart only a few radians/second rotation. I believe the radians are decimally valued (as in rotation is 0.x radians/sec) as well.).

one rad is 56degrees

few rad/s = around 100-150degrees per second

then you would rotate at a speed of about 1 rotation for every 2-4 seconds. thats quite a good rotation speed for a human.

hmm, well- I will have to recheck the site for the exact number, but the radians/second value was a <1, so I believe it is very little.

Also- I have actually decided to not get Light of Altair (ATM, as I still think I would enjoy it immensely), and instead buy Evochron Legends+preorder the action/adventure game Dark Void.

ARMA 2... You cant go wrong with it. It may have a steep learning curve but once you get into the game and the community... omg its so fun...(50 player co op.)

Crysis has some really good mods... Im still waiting on Mechwarrior Living Legends.

Stalker is a good choice from what I have heard... Im looking at it too.

Stalker for me too

I haven't heard anything good about Timeshift. I'm looking forward to Singularity, which looks like a better take on the time-manipulating FPS concept.

As for Unreal Tournament 3, Epic just released the devkit for free. I'd expect to see mods be released as standalone games not requiring UT3 at all.

Go for Stalker (recommendation #3 from someone who's played it). Specifically the first one (Shadow of Chernobyl) since 1) it's cheaper and 2) there's probably more mods for it.

could you point me to the site for "Singularity"? That is, if it will have a PC version release. If not, then I won't be buying it (not really gonna spend US$200-300 on a '360 or PS3+cash for 1 game that looks awesome. that, and I don't happen to have ~400 US$s to shell out ATM).

The main draw for Dark Void over Stalker is- while it may not be FPS (it's 3rdPS to be precise), it has flawless vehicle/jetpack/infantry combat transition, and the story is EXTREMELY interesting to me. After all, what's not to like about a story that throws in Nikolai Tesla (super-giant electrical death machines FTW!).

Bioshock - but there is a gore factor in that game.  There is quite a bit of blood in some scenes.  The game is awesome, though.  The best FPS I have ever played.
