I'm a New Zealand based player, who mostly plays games with Australian based players. Up untill patch 1.19 I've never really had any issues playing with any of the australian players, (pings have always been anywhere from 80-180) However since patch 1.19 it seems my ping is now 500+ to these same people

At first i thought it was just my connection, but after some testing, I can still connect to US based players with the same ping range i used to (250-350).

Things i've tried

-using open dns

- restarting my router

- setting up a pentium 4 pc installing a linux firewall / routing os, connected to the net via a dynalink rta 1320 modem (to rule out a problem with my linksys wag 54g router)

- ringing up my isp (orcon) to ensure they haven't started throttling p2p bandwidth

- actually prove isp isn't throttling, a friend of mine put up a torrent in Aus (sydney) and i was downloading that at over 300kbs  (i'm going to assume i was limited by his upload)  i then put up a torrent and he downloaded from me at 180kbs.

These results to me show that my connection should be more than ample for a round of demigod

I'm fairly stumped as to what else could cause this, and i'm starting to think this isn't just simply an issue with me.

Players i now have ping issues with

Mixmagic, and Darkwo1f

I've also seen another NZ based player herbse1 have the same ping issues to antixx

I'd like to note, that these are direct connections, it's not a proxy issue.

If anyone has a solution or suggestion i'm more than happy to try something.

Hi Omen,

I think you've got me confused; I'm also in NZ and have issues with most Aussie players (as above plus Antix, Exx and Swoxks).

I believe the issue lies with an Optus exchange; located at 202.139.18.17

If you ping that address you find that it is horrid (circa 400 ms) when it should be something like the 80 to 180 ms we usually get.

I've used a IP route tracer to find the above.  Vodafone (my ISP) has a forum with people describing the same issue.  They think it is related to the school holiday traffic and something that Optus has done with the network.

Bad news for us is that most Aussie connections go through that address.

All other connections are fine (e.g. to the West Coast of USA).

It seems as though I owe an apology, Herbse1 is indeed correct, and I now have egg on my face for jumping on the let's blame stardock / gpg for everything bandwagon.

Sorry for the accusation and thanks for bringing us such a fun game, now excuse me, but i'm off to play USW players till the school holidays are over at the end of the week.

Yes i get this problem too... stupid optus.... haven't been able to play demi with friends in like a month.

Its quite simply pathetic. What is oddest of all is that I get perfectly normal ping to aussie servers on speetest.net, I wonder why that traffic doesn't go through the fail server/is there a way to stop your traffic routing through a particular server?
