Help with a VERY annoying problem

pretty please....

By on September 20, 2009 2:36:05 PM from GalCiv II Forums GalCiv II Forums

So my brother and I play jokes on eachother all of the time. No big deal, but this last time, he put file on my desktop named "File That You Can't Delete.haha "

I'm not sure if the website formatting will show it, but there is a mystery extra space at the end of the .haha file extension. It's annoying, and I can't delete, copy, paste, cut, move, rename, or otherwise do anything to it. If I try to rename it, it puts me into a loop, because my PC won't accept the old name (copy and pasted) because it won't allow me to paste that mystery space. If select rename, copy, and then paste that name onto a new file, it drops the mystery space and the file extension is just ".haha", which is an unknown file type that I can delete (the new file, not the old one)

Things I have tried, that have not worked

- delete it in safe mode

- tried to delete it from the command prompt

- use an unlocker program and delete it

- delete it from the command prompt, after shutting down the explorer.exe

Help please.

Good for PC revenge... load a BSOD wallpaper on his PC, then hide all his icons and taskbar/startmenu and disable his keyboard so he can't access anything.

Theres also this prank where you make a Print Screen of his desktop. Then you delete all the desktop icons and set the PrtScr as background. He'll be clicking on those icons forever

Something a little more elaborate... get and electronic alarm that gives off a BIOS error sound and connect it to his on/off switch, then every time he tries to start it he'll think he has a hardware issue.

Or another... get a smoke bomb that can be triggered electronically, connect it to his start button on a 5 -19 second delay.  When the smoke start billowing out of his PC, take a family snap of him bawling his eyes out to show all his friends.

Swap the 'm' and 'n' keys on the keyboard. No-one ever spots it and it drives people mad when they are trying to login.

Quoting Fuzzy Logic,

Unless it's in his user name.  It failed miserably when my friend tried to do it to someone at work.

Alternatively, get some music editing software.  Make a file called error.wav and have it be 45 seconds of silence followed by Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."  Replace the error.wav in C:\Windows\Media (assuming WinXP). It took a guy at work about 3 days until he complained enough for us to help him out... but it's possible that he just wasn't that bright.

Either way, I like the song. It made me smile everytime I heard it or heard him yell "damn it!", if he had headphones in.

Hi!

"File That You Can't Delete.haha "

That's why command prompt is still usefull. Within it you can delete any file, but you need to use its "short" name. You get "short" names of files in a particular folder if you type in it dir /x. In your case you'd probably delete it by typing del FILETH~1.HAH .

BTW, you can start calling your brother "script kiddie".

Did you try using ALT-0255 (from keypad) in place of the invisable character?

That's an old undeletable file joke.

also trying the ? character in place of the invisable one.

If he's a banker (the OP's brother, that is) I'd pull out his fingernails for nothing... toenails, too.

I would just download Gipo utilities and have it delete that file on the next boot, it will delete windows on your next boot if you tell it to

just run a search on google for Gipo its like gibinsoft.net or something its free, then I would go to your brothers computer and download gipo, and have it delete windows\system32\

You could always make a fake virus or error message that procs every time he opens a program. Or left clicks.

@starkers

I did the bsod thing a long time ago to him. That was about six pranks ago. Give or take.

@Vstlyer

Nothing that drastic. His main comp is a laptop anyway, not many places to hide

@IztokBitenc,  DanDaBear, & MogMoogle

I tried using the short name, it wouldn't accept it because the last character wasn't recognized by windows, and no it wasn't the alt 255 blank character. I tried that first. 8) I don't want to wipe his computer. It's not about pure punishment so much as utter annoyance.

@Nimbin & Wizard1956

Not to insult those people, but my brother is in recon, and has had quite a bit more training in hand to hand combat than I, and I'm guessing those people have had. Besides, the only physical harm he should be caused should be by me personally. 8)

@Pseudomelon and Kitkun

I can change the windows font to something unreadable. For the main event though, I'll change many of his system sounds. I'll record the original sound, then a moderate pause of silence, then it'll start playing a song or annoying tone for a bit. He rarely has his speakers on, so it might be awhile before he notices, but should be annoying enough when he does.

In that case, then, get one of those crime scene (do not enter) ribbons and put it on his laptop while he's out.  When he get home and sees it, tell him that the cops were there investigating illegal downloads, etc, and the laptop can't be touched/moved until the forensics people have scrutinised it in situ.

Here's one that works. Last April Fools Day, I took a screenshot of my wife's desktop. I then made it her wallpaper and put Conficker has you!!!  across her screen. Autohide the taskbar. When she couldn't click any of the "icons" on the screen,had no start button,  and saw conficker, she freaked out!!!!  It was hilarious.

Then again, there's always the pesky fly (available in the DX Object gallery, I think) and hide the systray icon... your brother is trying to do something on his laptop and this annoying fly is buzzing all over the screen, messing with his concentration.

Clippy is cruel and unusual punishment.

This thread can now be focused on ideas for payback against him. 8)

Install Litestep on his machine....boot into it as shell and delete explorer.exe.

Then take a screenshot of the LS shell in action...and save and set as his wallpaper.

Then edit the step.rc to comment out whatever modules are set to access the desktop, eg. popup.dll, but set all hotkey.dll options to load/run "format c: /q"

After that, break all his fingers so it will actually 'hurt' when he tries to access your computer in a similar way again.

Then leave home.
