Help me pick a game to buy!

By on August 18, 2009 5:34:36 PM from Elemental Forums Elemental Forums

Hi all - so I haven't had anything spark my interest enough for me to buy it lately. Anyone have any hidden gems to suggest? I like things from pretty much the whole spectrum of genres, though I am kind of burned out on FPS at the moment. Lately I've been tired of all my games. To give an idea of what I like, the most recent games I've bought/enjoyed were:

Left 4 Dead - loved it, but played too much and am burned out.

Prototype - really enjoyed the gameplay. Finished it twice and kind of tired of it now.

Knights of Honor - just recently discovered this game from a suggestion on this forum in another thread. Was addicted to it for about 2 weeks, but now I'm burned out on it, and the AI is too weak for me to enjoy the game any more. Love the game though, and still dabbling in this one a bit.

Majesty: Bought this on impulse and dug it for a while. Burned out on it now.

Thanks for any suggestion

I always manage to get back some empire building game. They seem to have the most replay value.

Or you can go outside and play with friends in real life. I hear that's fun too .

Main thing is leave games alone for awhile. The magic eventually drains away. But it returns with time.

Try some Total war games, like Rome: Total War, or Empire. If you dont like them there is a classic, Starcraft, but its old and might not be attractive, it would also help if you told us if you have any consoles.

Try Mount & Blade for something totally different and very enjoyable.  Plus there are tons of mods when you get bored of standard game and an addon due out this fall/winter if you get really addicted.

For an RTS game   I would suggest   Stronghold:Crusader

For an RPG game   I would suggest  Neverwinter Nights

For a TBS game   I would suggest  AgeofWonders:ShadowMagic

Get Dragon Age Origins in two-three weeks time. Your Rpg fix will be on for a good while. If you want a Great action game go with Red Faction Guerrilla. If you're a comic fan you can't go wrong with Batman Arkham Asylum. If you're looking for a awesome empire builder go with Galactic Civilizations 2 and it's expansions or Empire: Total War depending on if you want swords and guns or space ships and lasers. Don't forget Grand Theft Auto 4 if you want a good "sandbox" game.

I would recomend Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2.  I`ve really been enjoying it over the last month.  It`s on sale on Steam right now for $19.99.

Apparently it`ll be on sale till the end of monday.

Something about being a Central American Communist dictator really appeals to the Gargabee.

1. Keep an eye out for Dragon Age next month.  If it is half as good as Baldur's Gate 2, it should be worth playing.  (If you haven't played the Baldur's Gate games for PC, by all means make them your next purchase!)

2. Dawn of War: Soulstorm.  A real classic.  There are enough mods and maps to keep you playing a very long time.

3. Battle for Middle Earth 2. Yeah, I know it's by EA, but it's a great game anyway.

4. Morrowind and/or Oblivion: These kinds of open-ended RPG games are an acquired taste.  If you like them, each contains literally hundreds of hours of playing time.  There are many good mods available for both games.

5. Hitman games.  Hitman 2 is the best in my opinion, but Blood Money is great as well. Definitely the best stealth games I've played.

what is wrong with being a virtual Communist dictator, when you can start your own virtual cultural revolution.

Well a great game that was a big surprise to me! Perfect World, free to download, free to play. Just stay out of that company store ... until about level 70 at least ... which will take a long time; and actually if you get good at farming to buy gold ingame you don't need to do the store then. It truly is free to download and free to play, no glass ceiling, no restricted areas, no second class citizens. This is a game in the genre of WoW, Aion, and Guild Wars; open world with instanced dungeons.

pwi.perfectworld.com and download the client for your OS. Register your Account. All they want is your mailing address and a valid email address. They do not ask for credit card info or any other financial info. About 3.5 gig for the client install.

All you would expect and more from a WoW'ish style game. Three races each with its own starting area, six classes. And an expansion is coming late this year to make that 4 races and 8 classes. PvE and PvP servers, PvE highly recommended. You can have 3 servers, 8 characters per server. Auction House, player consignment shops, flying, swimming, underwater, very high jumping, ingame mail, teleport system, crafting professions, excellent new player intro help, and I'm leaving a lot out. Land mounts. The Apothecary Craft is essential. Learn it right away. Over 5,000 quests, some of them a bit grindy, but most are quite imaginative. Guilds too, called factions in this game. And lots of PvP if you want it, but PvP is purely optional on a PvE server and you do not have to do PvP if you do not want to.

Graphics are lower end than WoW, GW, or Aion. But what they do with those graphics is simply outstanding. Huge beastiary, pleasant environment, lots of "cute" and eye candy in this game. Rather challenging, and a bit "geek." Be prepared to think and learn. http://www.pwdatabase.com/pwi/ an essential resource. Plus the forum for your class. This is not an easy game.

Their marketing model is fascinating. Lots of players like to buy gold online. Way this is setup, PWI are the only gold sellers in town! Ingame, the medium is coins. The Auction House allows you to buy gold for coins, and for players who have bought gold from PWI to sell gold for coins. Players who jump in and buy gold online are those who would anyway, plus the lazy and the foolish; this is about 90% of all players. So, PWI is making out like bandits and able to afford a new expansion to a game that is rapidly growing. It has been out a year now and is well debugged. GM's monitor, and you have no spam and a well behaved community. Very friendly and helpful players.

This is a very large game. After you learn to fly, it becomes twice as large with mobs up there in the air, flying cities and the like. For those familiar with WoW, QuestHelper and Cartographer are built in. Especially after you get flying, for most quest targets and turnins, you just click on the destination in your quest log and your character flies to it. Keep an eye on the sky above, though. Here there be dragons!

All characters can fly at level 30. But the Elves can fly right away, soon as you start your character. The Elven Priest and Elven Archer both rock!

I've played both WoW and GW since their retail release. For a game out only one year, PW is doing very well indeed. Don't feel you need to fully level a character. All levels are fun! Play maybe one of each class to level 20 to see how you like it. And if you get bored, unlikely, hey the game was free and you can come back anytime for the same low low price of free!

The videos do not do it justice. This is a very pretty game, just gorgeous.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkWnq8LxK_0 level 107 Elven Priestess

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU3PweNZW5A&feature=PlayList&p=76D42233AC036381&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=7 kind of freaky but fun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHubKf45ihk yes, there are land mounts. And PvP. On a PvE server you can decide when to PvP, on a PvP server it is open PK. Beware.

So, I do not have a new game for you to buy! Get this one for free and be happy!
