Can't connect to others/others can't connect to you? Gather!

By on June 4, 2009 12:14:39 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

Its kind of irritating to see players with the same issue scattered around the forums helplessly. Why not gather everyone under one thread so the admins might have an easier time addressing this issue? (if they plan to, that is...)

Apparently the issue is even after the usual solutions (portforward, disabling firewalls etc), a portion of the players are unable to connect to others, or the others are unable to connect to you. We cannot connect to others probably because Demigod works in a way that we firstly try to connect to the host/host connects to us. If the host is unable to connect to us, the rest of the players in the lobby will appear to us as 'Waiting to connect to xxxx', with the host 'Attempting to connect to xxxx'. If the host is unable to connect to you, then you will be stuck with connecting to the host and no one else gets to connect to you. (just what I observed)

IMO, this IS a problem on our end. The host is able to connect to others, but not us. It lead me to think ports are not properly opened or something is blocking the connection on my end, but seeing as others who have the exact same problem, I was thinking Stardock should at least attempt to help us by at least replying to our help threads.

How the problem looks like:

Well, McShane87 (sorry to use your name here if you see this) is the host of this custom game. I can connect to him as you can see me as aqualeris, but he cannot connect to me, as seen by the 'Attempting to connect'. Because the host cannot connect to me, the others are queued behind him. As long as I don't get past the host, the rest will forever be unable to connect to me, thus shown by 'Waiting to connect'. Host always has the top priority to connect to a player. (this is purely based on my observation after testing this bug out for many times. Someone correct me if I am wrong. The connectivity in Demigod is highly complex so I might get this wrong)

Soooooooooo....

I'll make things even easier to the admins. All players with the same issue, please gather under this thread and sign!

Signed, aqualeris.

Cheers people!

Thats the same problem I have - check my thread in this section of the forum and Technical Support for screenshots.

No, it's not. He has failed to connect to the host because they can't connect. You failed to connect to the host because the host never even tried because of the crappy queueing system. Different problem.

Does your router use symmetric NAT?

June 4, 2009 3:46:23 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

Same here. I've opened all the required ports (6073 and 6100-6200 UDP), allowed Demigod through the Windows Firewall. I even tried DMZ. All to no avail. Every time I try an online match, I fail to connect to everyone. The funny thing is, they can connect to me fairly quickly.

Internet -> Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem -> E-Tech RTBR01 Router -> My modest PC of epicness.

If there is a hardware-related cause, the router is the likely culprit. This thing is ANCIENT! I checked the firmware and it's from 2001. This baby doesn't have stuff like that shiny symmetric NAT or whizz-bang universal PnP you kids are all bragging about these days. It just blocks ports, that's it.

A minute ago, I've reinstalled the game from the disc, updated through Impulse, fired it up, logged in and joined a custom game with only one player. He connected to me, I didn't connect to him.

Here's the log:

I've run out of ideas and I hope you guys can help me. I'm considering less legal means to play online, because playing on my own seems, well... pointless.

Quoting kryo,
Does your router use symmetric NAT?

...Sorry, but I've got no clue what that means ><... My router has really limited functions.. Either way, my internet works in a weird way. I have NO modem.

Internet/wall phone socket >> my 2Wire 2701HGV-E router >> PC

Many solved their connection issues by just directly connecting their PC to their modem, but I cant't. Some say my router functions both as a router and as a modem. Any help on this? This is a plan from the ISP Singtel from Singapore. They call this router the MIO. Couple of other Singaporeans using the same plan are having issues with connection as well.

Help is highly appreciated.

I also get this exact problem.

Quoting kryo,
Does your router use symmetric NAT?

I have no idea. I tried reading up on it but it went over my head.

I have a billion 7401 with the most recent firmware if thats any help.

Edit: I dont seem to have these problems when connecting to people in my own country. Just when pings get over 200 or 300 I start having problems. Perhaps it is some timing issue? It seems to be bad with this latest patch. A couple of days ago I didnt have any trouble with 300-400 pings.

Would emailing the log files be of any help? Give me an email address and I'd be happy to do so.

I have this problem as well.

Every game I can connect to the first host, and no one else can connect to me.

My network is Billion 7300GA with public IP routing to three computers in the network with private IP addresses.. 4MB down 1MB up.

Windows vista pc with Nforce networking, windows firewall exceptions made, dr web antivirus (no packet monitoring that I can see).

Things I have tried:

1. Serverproxyonly - No difference.

2. Ports routed, and no ports routed - No difference.

3. Router DMZ - No effect.

4. uPnP tunred on or off on router - No difference.

5. Changing which ports are used - No difference.

6. Tried all of the above combinations each time each update is released - No good.

I have yet to play a single game online, It's beyond a joke.

If this lasts a couple of weeks longer I'm getting a refund and buying something that will actually work.

Same Problem here

Internet => TP Link TL-R402M Router => My PC

Windows XP SP3, Alice-DSL Connection, no firewall active

Relevant Ports are forwarded and confirmed open by the portforward.com tool, uPnP is turned off, even tried to put my ip in the DMZ, doesnt do anything.

June 5, 2009 10:09:16 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

So opening ports makes no different?

Apparently the portforward portchecker claims my ports are closed even after forwarding. Should be an issue on my ISP's end, but if opening ports makes no difference also, guess I'm back to square one. For a moment I kept thinking my ports were closed and thats why I can't connect.

If there is a hardware-related cause, the router is the likely culprit. This thing is ANCIENT! I checked the firmware and it's from 2001.

That may be something to look into for you, then. I know most issues earlier on (prerelease) were with routers older than 2005 or so. They tend to be particularly weak and just choke when faced with too much simultaneous traffic to different hosts.

Sorry, but I've got no clue what that means

Basically, if you have symmetric NAT, when your computer tries to open a connection to someone through a given port (ex:6112), the router converts that over to a random high-range port (usually somewhere 15000-16000). As a result that traffic either gets blocked on the other user's end, or their traffic comes back on that high port rather than the correct 6000-6200 one that you probably forwarded and gets blocked by your router.

If you post your log it should show what port your traffic is going out on and it'll be apparent if you have symmetric NAT or not. Note that you probably don't if *some* people can connect to you but not all.

As a general note, I've heard some good things about our progress for people with multiple IPs (usually the case with high-end DSL services), so stay tuned for updates including that.

I can't connect to any games.  I can log in, but skirmish won't work.  With custom games, I can click on a game, but it just sits there and says "attempting to connect" or whatever the message is.  I have the proper ports forwarded, and they are open.  Here is an excerpt from my impulsereactor.log of my latest attempts.  I usually just hit cancel and give up when it doesn't work.

Reading what you said about symmetric NAT, it seems that my ports are 50k-60k rather than the 6100-6200.  Does this mean I need a new router?

Quoting EternalError,
I can't connect to any games.

Don't spend EVEN MORE money on a new router when it might not work.

Just sit around and see what Stardock does. Single player with nightmare isn't so bad. Although for me, Steam > Impulse. No offence, but TF2/L4D works much better than Demigod. Sigh.

100% exact same case. Never played a Demigod game with other LIVE players before after purchasing the game for one month.

Whew, I'm really (NOT) excited to see how Stardock will address this issue.

It does definitely look like that's the case but as others have said I wouldn't jump to get a new one just yet. Unless using the DMZ prevents the router from changing the ports on outgoing traffic (I don't think it does, but it's worth a shot), there's not much to do on your end at the moment. But we are aware of the issue and we're working on it.

DMZ on the router did not change anything.  Is it possible that the problem is my modem?  I have a westell 6100, which is also technically a router.  I did research last night and realized that to turn it into just a modem, I needed to run it in bridged ethernet mode, however, that did not change anything.  Is it possible that I need to set DMZ, IP passthrough, or something like that on the modem, and that would fix it?

Basically, is it possible that it is the MODEM and not the ROUTER (a linksys WRT54GS) is the device changing my port numbers?

MANY thanks once again kyro. At least its good to hear that there MIGHT finally be a fix to this one-month old problem.

I bought a new ADSL2 modem 2 weeks ago, digital downloaded the game yesterday. Same problem, I can't connect to other players. Tried all solutions listed on the forums.

I can't even mention how ridiculous this problem is when the game relies heavily on multiplayer.

i am on of the many unfortunate folks that have the same problem.  i tried opening my ports up and turning on DMZ.. shut off all AV software, and firewalls, still nothing.  my modem is an Actiontec M1000 are there any known issues with that particular modem??  i hope someone has some good advice because im really itching to play this game online.. single player as with most other games is pretty lame. lol  so how can i fix this???

Thanks in advance!!

June 10, 2009 1:09:27 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

I had an Actiontec M1000 from Qwest and was having no luck connecting to anyone.  Since it was still within the 30 days that I received it, I asked Qwest to swap it out for their wireless model, a Motorola 3347 (it also allows up to 4 wired connections).  It took about two weeks, but I eventually received the new modem/router.  With the new router I could now connect to 4 other people, but never 5.  Worked great for 2v2 games, but nothing bigger.  I was pretty sure this problem couldn't be caused by the router, so I suspected my ISP.  I did little test.  I loaded a popular torrent, and looked to see how many uploads were allowed.  Although I had upload connections to 8 or more systems, it was never uploading to more than 4 at a time!  It looks like Qwest restricts upload connections to a maximum of 4 simultaneous connections!  (I haven't called Qwest yet to verify this, so I could be wrong, but the evidence is pretty strong).

Then the June 3rd update came out, and suddenly using /serverproxyonly on the DemiGod shortcut started working like a charm.  Unless the host kicks me for being proxied, I've been able to join every game since; even 5v5 games, with no connection or lag issues.  My ping is usually 200 - 290.

June 10, 2009 1:35:25 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

how do you use the serverproxyonly?? do you think maybe that would work on the m1000???  it seems like i can connect to everyone but no one can ever connect to me... i really want to play this online..   anyone else have an Actiontec M1000 that got it to work????

June 10, 2009 6:30:09 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

Guys. It IS quite pointless to try and fiddle with your modem/router to try and get the game working. Only in rare occasions does it actually work.

Stop wasting even MORE money on new modems/routers just to get ONE game working. kyro claims on a fix for this issue soon, so lets just wait. Since we've already waited so long, why not wait a little more? Personally I was so desperate till I wanted a refund too, but due to certain circumstances, I can't. I can't get a new router too as my parents would question me for why the hell did I get a new router, and neither do I know if purchasing a new one would make this game work.

If this problem is really never fixed, I'll just uninstall Demigod and forget about it completely, treating it as money well-spent to never buy P2P games again since my router/ISP hates it. Playing Demigod only on SP is even worst than not playing it at all. Playing SP will keep making you yearn for multiplayer since AI is just worthless. Not playing it and forgetting about the game will at least be a better move.

I'll be keeping a lookout for the next few patches, and if by a month or more and this issue still remains, Demigod is saying goodbye to me. Currently I have not touched Demigod for almost a week or so. Steam games are more reliable, nuff' said.

June 10, 2009 7:03:36 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

Hey guys,

I've had the same problem for over a week with the game. But i managed to find the fault & its ended up being my router/modem (Billion Bipac 7402GL). After days upon day of tearing my hair out over the issue, returning the game. Then a few days later buying it again because i was determined to figure out the cause of the problem. I ended up removing my router & replacing it with my old one (Billion Bipac 5102). Miraculously it worked i was able to connect to games and more importantly others were able to connect to me. Within a few second i was in a game (In Australia) playing away.

I had tried all the different suggestions on the forum including /serverproxyonly, opening up ports & turning intrusion detection off but this did not help.

Now im not saying that its definately your problem & to go out immediately to buy a new router but keep it open as a possibility. If you dont have an extra router like me, borrow a friends or something just too test out. It might save you a world of frustration.

Hope it helps.
