Idol Suggestion

By on May 14, 2009 9:53:49 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

I apologise if this has been suggested before.

After playing mainly generals for some games, I think the idols system can do better.

Right now, they're just a linear progression of each type (melee, ranged, healer) and each upper tier renders the previous one obsolete.

I was thinking if there can be a lot more variety of idols, each offering a specific bonus, other than having only 3 idol types with linear progression of strength.

With more idols, they can be seen as an on-the-fly augmentation of the general depending on the situation in the game and would much better serve the generals that owns them.

Possible idols could have (just throwing ideas):

* mana regen aura

* large visual radius for scouting

* item carrying/shopping capability just like the chicken in Dota

* armour increase aura

* debuff removing ability

* damage increase aura

* minion resurrection ability

To balance this off, the general would still only be able to own a max of three idols at any one time.

What do you guys think?

Not  a bad idea, but I really don't think they should produce anything drastic in terms of stat-benefit for the DG, they're already pretty powerful imo. I like a couple of your suggestions though.

Archer -> large visual radius

Healer -> i think the heals already count as an auxillary function

Minos -> maybe a passive buff that has a chance to proc on their hits (that buffs them, not too substantially though)

* item carrying/shopping capability just like the chicken in Dota

Can we pleeeease stop trying to turn DG into DotA?

I guess the "just like the chicken in Dota" phrase caused that suggestion to look like another "please be like Dota" idea.

That wasn't my intention, however. Regardless of whether the idea is from Dota or not, there are numerous times where I would so wish for the ability to have something do the shopping for me so that I can save the trip back to base. If the original idea is good, it stands on it's own feet. One reason I can imagine to not have this ability, is to enforce the penalty of needing to take yourself off the frontline to make that trip back to the shop, perhaps purely as a design choice.

It's just I feel that the idols need more love than simply having Tech 1 to Tech 4 (my apologies for the SupCom reference), with each level of the same idol rendering the previous one obsolete.

Hmm.. I actually agree now. With the buffed minions. I still maintain that item chickens only seem like a good idea because ppl have gotten used to them with dota. Not having to go back to base because you play smart is a bonus. Having Bravado earns you a kill, or a trip back to base / death. Keeps the risk/reward ratio balanced.

I'm still not a pro with creeps, but I think in addition to buffing them like you've said, better control over them would be nice (like, a UI button to put priests on "heal only" or "attack only" which would work nicely if they had other abilities too).

Maybe that's the way to go? Something like... beside every idol icon have 3 different settings, the T1, T2 and T3 idols each increase the number of settings available by 1 (so, T1 priests can only select "Heal your Hero" only, T2 can select "Heal Allied Heroes", T3 can select either of those or Rez Other Minions). T4 would allow you to delegate 2 duties to them.

Other ideas would be... Minotaur: 1. Critical Strike (funny for a minion, but would still increase their effectiveness) -> 2. Minor AOE Atk Spd Buff -> 3. Mvt Speed Debuff on target.

Archer: 1. Improved Vision Radius -> 2. Critical Strike -> 3. Mvt Speed Debuff

Ohh...  I like this idea.

i think it is an interesting idea. Demigod could benefit from some ideas from dota -and by the way demigod mustn't copy all dota choices and features, there is some tension each time someone talk of dota on this forum because some people would like demigod to have all dota features. But many dota features are just irrelevant in demigod, you don't need to have 100 demigods when you can specialize them with skill trees, 18 or 20 It would already be enough.

That feature would be really usefull, maybe even a little too usefull, leaving the battlefield for one minutes (or 30 if you use a scroll, but you lose gold) means a loss of xp and an opportunity for the ennemies to kill more easily your teammates.

I just hope that if the devs add that idol, it won't be a chicken

While being able to customize your minions would sure be cool (level * type * ability = cost)`, assasins already don't have anything to mirror the general's extra minions, and I don't think buffing them would exactly contribute to balance.

`Also this setup would reduce the size in the window, making space for the extra options.

EDIT: Why not, some spare ideas for each.

Types: Minotour, Archer, Cleric, bird/angel, some sorta tankish melee minion, weaker than minos but more hp.

Levels: 1-4, of course, more can be easily added

Abilities: Stat buffs, auras, maybe spells like the cleric's healing spell

Naz:

I think you misunderstood me, though you seemed to have developed an interesting idea yourself.

What I wanted was to do away with the existence of upper tier idols of the same kind, and replace them with a whole new set of useful idols.

What we have now:

Melee Type Tier 1 to 4

Ranged Type Tier 1 to 4

Healer Type Tier 1 to 4

What I am suggesting:

Melee Type

Ranged Type

Healer Type

Amour Aura Type

Damage Aura Type

Visual Radiius Type

Debuff Removal Type

Minion Ressurrection Type

Etc.

My suggestion means there are no upper tiers of each type of idol, but there are many more types of idols for you to pick three from at any one time. This way, generals can augment themselves and their small army with various effects depending on the situation of the fight.

For example, Queen of Thorns might choose to buy a Debuff Removal Type idol to counter an enemy Unclean Beast's spit. Then as the game progresses, she sells this idol and buys the Healer, Ranged and Ressurrection idols to push. Each idol is thus bought for their specific, single augmentative ability other than to simply add more numbers and DPS to the general's army.

No upper tier would be great, idols would just have to level with the demigod.

By the way, Frogboy said in a post that he wanted assassins to be able to use idols, so it won't cause balance problems if they are pumped up a little.

Ah. I did misunderstand.

If we're suggesting radical changes, I'd like to have one idol slot devoted to custom minion, replacing the three we get currently. It could be customized with favor points, giving people a reason to keep using them even after they've bought everything they intend to ever use, and I think having to stick to a single minion type at a time will let people run with a certian strategy instead of just buying at least level 1 in all the minions and being able to do anything they feel like decently.
