Voicechat.

Seriously Stardock, this is a feature that will enchance this multiplayer-oriented game 10fold.

Welcome to videogaming after the year 2000.  ALL FPSs have it, all co-op Action/RPG games have it.  Recent RTSs have voice chat (Red Alert 3, anyone?).  Hell, even puzzle games have it!

Put it in, damnit!!

Quoting WinterStar1983,
Voice chat is should not be a priority.  Too many things to consider.  Plus, Ventrilo (and Teamspeak) are better than 90% of in-game VoiP's.

About your Ventrilo/teamspeak arguement:

So, you are typing out all your Vent/teamspeak info everygame?
That would be the only way this would be an acceptable arguement, in my mind.
But, because you aren't, point mooted.

every game that has built in voice chat ive turned off it off with

ventrilo is hte best quality/speed, and i have more control over who i have to listen to

in WoW..i muted 15 players in the first day of it and eventually turned it off

In any game with free voice chat theres always the ppl who spam music etc into itand its annoying

Currently I play with a friend and we both use Skype.  Very easy to download and set-up and has a great voice activated system.  We are just able to talk back and forth well without any break-up or confusion.  I have used both TS and Vent extensively in WoW and while they both work well there are definitely issues.  Voice activation was always spotty and did not pick up well.  Set-up can be technical depending on # of users and how uniform you want your sound experience to be.  WoW uses many, many more keys than DG (for me anyhow) and I ended up binding my PTT to my mouse thumb button - but with the limited amount of buttons needed in DG I can't imagine it would be hard to find a close KB button.

This does not help with random people though as it would require alt-tabbing out and adding their name to Skype - but it would still be quicker/easier than dealing with Vent info.

I find that playing with voice is a much more enjoyable experience.  We are able to communicate quickly and easily - much faster and more effective than typing.

Also, even though CS/TF2 have a voice system I find myself keeping everyone on mute unless I am playing with someone I know or I want some additional entertanment.  I believe DG would be the same way.  I would listen at first but if all I was getting from someone was crap instead of communication I would just turn them off.  Would be nice to have a memory of each player so when they joined my system would either mute them or not depending on a previous choice.

(I'll add that if you haven't used Skype the only info you need to connect is a username and the sound quality is amazng)

Quoting Chaosnaska,
Dude, 13 year olds are only on Xbox 360.

13 year olds aren't on PC. Wtf, lol.

Team chat is fantastic in small player games like these.  World in Conflict has voice chat and it works very well.  With only 5-8 people on a sided (WiC) you do not get many people who spaz out on voice chat.  Plus, there is always the mute button that can be applied person by person.  Demigod would benefit greatly from voice chat.  I cant tell you how many times a team player has run away from me while I am trying to heal them with Sedna.  Or when I type "go left" and they go right because they got confused.  Voice chat is just pure win in these games.

If I'm going to play with VoIP, I only want it with Team Mates. Listening to shit talkers is one thing, and even voice available in PuGs is an annoying thought since I bet it's only going to be people arguing instead of playing.

If you want VoIP really bad, there's plenty of solutions past Vent and TS for cheaper people:

->Xfire now has dedicated voice chatrooms and the quality isn't bad.

->There's a free program called GSC that I recommend for peeps who want a more "vent server" style setup. It's an IM with an in-game overlay like Xfire but the voice chat actually lets you setup a 200-slot dedicated server on their data farms, and split up the rooms however you want and has some pretty good codecs. Surprised nobody has thought about trying to make an open/public Demigod voice chat with it yet.

Aside from this, if VoIP is a top priority for your game play, I'd recommend taking a chill a pill and letting them work on making their multiplayer connections top knotch before worrying about these luxuries. I'd say connection issues followed by Clan support is more beneficial to the community than giving random players the ability to yell at eachother.

I dont think its an issue as NOT having it.  Its whether its important right now.  Once the game is ironed out, then I would agree to have voice chat.

I would rather have balancing issues or maybe the first set of new demigods before in-game VoIP.  And it better have good VoIP options when it does come out!

And people... do take a chill pill.

I will concur with the people that say voice chat isn't an immidiate neccesity.
Most of the time when its used to effect its between a group of players that know each other anyhow so they could have easily used vent or ts2. From all the voice chat in games i've seen so far i must say I can't understand 75% because of weird accents/diffrent language, crappy microphone or general choppiness. That could ofcourse just be me and my computer.
in random games it doesn't really add much because there is no real complicated strategy so it will only serve for people to call each other nubs or being a general annoyance. that being said I have no trouble with it being integrated at some point with a mute function but its certainly not a top priority.
More stable net code, a text window where you can talk after the game is finished, new demigods, balance changes. Are in my view all more important then voicechat. although I can recommend learning to type blindly so it's not such a bother to send a quick message.
My two cents have been added.

generally speaking pc gaming is more adult oriented.

tbh i really dont want to hear anyones voice in a public game.

its really not that hard to READ THE CHAT all you have to do is move your damn eyes to the left of the screen.

Hey OP, it's past the year 2000, get Ventrilo.

And I'm sure I'd really like to listen to YOU over voicechat.

April 28, 2009 7:29:53 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

I agree it should be implemented.  It would make team coordinated attacks so much easier.  Can you imagine playing Left 4 Dead without voice chat?  Sure, you're the guy who constantly drags down his team and loses.

If you don't like it or don't want to use it, you don't have to.  Mute the voice stream.

If everybody is going to mute everybody, then there really isn't a point of adding voice chat anyways is there? And besides, implementing voice chat takes resources, precious resources that could be spent elsewhere. New demigods, new maps, map editor, balance, and, oh I dunno, connectivity maybe? They have way too much stuff on their hands right now. Maybe demanding voice chat at a later date would be fair, but right now it just isn't needed.

We use mumble for voice chat, it's pretty cool

@ Mauxe. Both a friend and i also use Skype for in game chat. I'd be happy to exchange details, always keen to be able to have more in game communication.

Quoting Demigod3k,

rofl or so that we could listen to a german kid talking while he naturaly assume we all undarstand german...

Yeah lol. A few days ago I was watching a YouTube video uploaded by someone in Japan... and the only comment was something in French. Why do people assume you speak their language? Is everyone retarded?

April 30, 2009 1:09:15 AM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

I use Ventrilo...

It's very rare to see built-in voicechat used correctly in a game.

eg. TF2 is just a bunch of people whining and swearing.

Though I suppose, if voicechat was limited to your team, that might be ok.

(ie. you can't hear the enemy team)

You really have to look at this from both sides and make a compromise.

Personally i would like to see some form of voicechat added.
People saying "oh i dont wanna hear them" its a poor argument at best.
if you dont want to listen im sure they would have some option to turn it off.
Im sure it would ruin your lives to just check a box in an option menu.

That being said i dont think it should be to high on their list of things to do.
Basicly as people said if you really want to talk to people as of now your limited to doing it with friends via Vent TS skype.
Which for the time being is pretty good overall.
random people dont listen anyways...

So for now. want voice chat? your gonna have to do it with friends only
The game has bigger things to deal with.

Can we not all agree with a voice chat being put in later on with a global mute option?
i think that sounds pretty reasonable for both sides of this argument.

Quoting stryker247,

Quoting pwnophobia, reply 1So I can listen to 13 year olds rage when I snipe them from across the map? No thanks. I'll stick to vent.
it would be team orientated as all other games

so i can listen to this twat as he dies  it is a stupid idea   vent is just as good so is skype and team speak

May 4, 2009 1:10:44 PM from Demigod Forums Demigod Forums

Quoting DalzK,
Fact: They are going to add Voicechat

Fact: Skype, Teamspeak and Vent all exist.

Me and my buddy use Skype and it's awesome. I've used Vent and Teamspeak as well but you have to start a server for that and depending the sound quality isn't always that good. Skype however has been great. Clear sound, free, and low bandwidth.

As a counter point, to all those saying how rare it is or how it doesn't work having voice chat in games.. umm, look at the Xbox 360.. there's voice chat in ever multiplayer game. Really, at this stage of the game it should be there upon game release. Pretty lazy to not have it in IMHO.
