Is there a way to force the resolution to 800x600?

open up game.prefs and snoop about in there. be sure to make a backup first!

 

that said, just upgrade your computer; if it's slow enough that you're considering 800x600 then it's simply too slow for DG.

It should be possible to force it via the Game.prefs, as BulletMagnet suggests (look for the primary_adapter line or something similar). However, most menus are made for a minimum vertical resolution of 768. With 720 you can still see the favor points item menu for example, but not the title (so you don't see how many favor points you actually got). With 600 it would be even worse of course.
