Saw this (take a look at the 8 slides in the show)…as well as a notice about a 50 mile wide swarm of grasshoppers over Texas…and figured this might be the right time to say, “It’s been great! Fanx for the fish!”, if these events are a portent of something awful to come…

This is not as uncommon than you think.  It's rarely on this scale- but I saw it happen a few times when I was doing weather radar  in the military.

It's significant to aviation since that can gunk up engines just like a birdstrike.

I went through one of these type events in Arizona while in the military in the 1970's, grasshoppers everywhere! The crunch noise and windshield getting smeared when driving was sickening!

Yet another reason to despise the BBC.

In my SERE course I had to eat snakes and bugs...with and without the luxury of cooking. Left something to be desired, syddie.

Weather channel also tracked the swarms and displayed the radar images. Huge to say the least.

Yep... the swarm was about 50 miles around at times and up to 2500 feet high they said.

Good year for bugs.  I saw another story about a bridge somewhere in the US that had so many dead mayflies piled up on it that they had to get out a snow plow to scrape them off, then throw down some sand for traction on top of the leftover goop. Lovely.

well... I'm sure it's all in the preparation.... I've had chocolate coated bees and fried grasshoppers... they were nice... and witchetty grub soup....yummy... almondy tasting... when our overpopulating reaches a point where we've eaten the planet out of stocks of food.... I'm sure they'll be coming up with acceptable recipes involving insects to make them tasty...

Locust Linguine

Weevil Frittata

Mayfly Quiche

the wichetty grub is very large compared to our grubs. Probably take more of ours to make a soup, but then they are very hard to find! Here is the odd question on this Monday. Are the insects humanely killed first, then eaten... or like lobsters, just thrown alive in boiling water ?

I think they are humanely gassed while watching huge projection screen footage of endless acres of wheat and rye crops...

It's pretty quick... they don't have time to complain of the film quality being a little... grainy...
