We’re not competitors

By on February 21, 2012 7:41:19 PM from JoeUser Forums JoeUser Forums

I wonder sometimes whether PC gamers realize that game developers in the PC game market don’t consider each other “competitors”.

People from Valve, Blizzarrd, Bioware, all the way down to a Stardock consider ourselves on the same side.

Who do you think we get to hang out other than with each other?

Maybe that's the problem with the game industry.

The Beatles always looked at other contemporaries as competitors.

Wow...you really do love to troll Brad anytime he speaks highly of his own company! i recall a thread from a year or two ago where you did the same thing.
If you think so little of Stardock, why are you here?

You professed that opinions matter in the other thread, when talking about how GC2 should not have been in the top 100 list, so how about you listen to some of that advice and realize, that other people may well consider Stardock to be on the same level or above even, than the other developers mentioned.

I do.
<Edit> too late Noob, i saw your post. For those wondering what he said. He lol'd that Brad had the audacity to mention Stardock in the same breath as the other titles.
I'll stand by my comments.<Edit>

Ok fine that was trollish.

However on that other thread I ended up being 100% correct.

Just sayin...

LOL.

Seriously, if I could have the whole community over for a party I would.

What most people don't realize is that I'm a Usenet/forum guy who started a game company. I was a forum guy FIRST.

My motivation, good or bad, is to make games for my friends.

People have this same misconception about many industries and organizations. Universities are a great example. The idea that, say, Harvard and Yale or Stanford and Berkeley or Auburn and Alabama are rivals is a myth perpetuated by undergraduate athletics. In reality, each of those places have faculties that collaborate with each other and shared community projects and so on. That doesn't mean they don't compete (for students, for grants, in sports), but at the end of the day that they share a core goal is more important than their differences.

I love you brad.  Good and honorable busimessman.  Takes strong character to succeed as you have and still care about your employees and your customers.

Don't hang out with that guy from GamersGate, he said dickish things about Stardock and impulse.  We should be in the presence of the dickish.

Yeah Valve and Blizzard are in-love with each other... so much so that they just sue each-other for fun!

February 22, 2012 11:30:15 PM from Sins of a Solar Empire Forums Sins of a Solar Empire Forums

Meh, Blizzard has a long history of deciding they own someone elses work when a deal doesn't go the way they want it too.  They're a lot like Apple, popular with a devoted fan base and highly polished products, but mostly borrowed ideas they like to keep others from using.

Blizzard can't legally claim ownership of a mod concept, just their assets used in the creation of it.  It would mean Stardock owns Paramount IP because of the SOA2 mod.  The Frog is probably just being polite when he lists them with the rest, or maybe trying to avoid a flame war when all the rabid fans jump his ass for excluding them.  One or the other.

I think its true that developers and other people in the industry who have a love for games want to get along. The problem is the greedy business types that ruin it for everyone else and lead to 90% of all the controversy.

Well, he did specify developers. The suits at the top of some companies on the other hand...

Guys, let's get reasonable here. We live in bone-breaking capitalism (a dog-eat-dog world, the big fish eat the small one, the survival of the fittest etc.) and the video gaming industry is just like any other kind of industry, the game designing and publishing companies are just like any other companies; they put money and profit above everything else! The system always worked like this and it doesn't show any signs it tries to change at all.

Rivalties and sue issues have a long, big history in videogame industry. Each company try to buy or sue the other one and vice versa! Even the reviews of all these various videogames that has passed are about money; is the company rich enough to bribe the reviewers in order for their game to get a pure 10/10 and therefore advertising it through the gamers, or it is a small garage company which never had a chance in the first place and being axed mercilessly by the reviewers?

There is no love between companies, just profit!
