Hello everyone,

As Stardock's web developer, I was tasked with creating a statistics website for Demigod using the ungodly amount of data we (will) have available to us.  That website is now located at http://pantheon.demigodthegame.com.  A bunch of you already saw the "beta" version a few weeks back.  While this site is still a beta, I am happy enough with it to remove the beta message that was at the top of the page in the previous version.

Today I pushed an update that added a bunch of new statistics, pages, and a slight redesign. Starting today I will be keeping a log of changes to the site in this post.  I will also be checking for any suggestions, ideas, or feedback you guys may have on the site, so feel free to reply with any ideas.

Please keep in mind that the site is still a work in progress.  Some numbers are still off, the design will likely be changed some more, and we will be adding more statistics in the future.  It will likely be updated a few more times before Demigod's release.

Change Log:
9/21/2009
- Fixed how player stats are saved to the database, so custom games now count for Ladder Rankings/Experience (not all custom games though, just ranked custom games).
- Added Notes tab to player pages. This will allow you to view and manage private notes for other players, which will eventually appear within Demigod itself. Only you can view notes you've written, and you cannot view other's notes or notes written about you.
- The player stats on the left side of the primary player page now includes a small description for each stat.
- Fixed minor bugs with graphs.
- Fixed other minor bugs.

6/5/2009
- Added "Ladder" stats and rankings, which include Skirmish and Pantheon games.
- Updated "Overall" stats to include everything, Overall is not ranked.
- Added Tournament Stats to player stats page.
- Player's games listing now shows "NA" if a game is not counted.
- Updated search page to show more information and be more informative.
- Updated achievements page, it will be turned on when the stats are reset.
- Other minor bug fixes and design changes.

5/18/2009
- Added graphs for each Pantheon tournament.
- Added graphs for maps.
- Added graphs for Demigods.
- Minor bug fixes.
- More changes to back-end for API.

5/11/2009
- Player stat charts!  Go to any player's initial page and you'll see some cool new charts and a slightly different layout.
- New tournament lists page (click on View All Tournaments at the bottom of any Pantheon page).
- Added current team progress chart (by percentage) to the right of the Pantheon page.
- Minor performance and back-end tweaks.

4/29/2009
- Lots of back-end changes to prepare for public API.
- Added sorting options to the Top Demigods and Maps pages.
- Updated all pages to make a more consistent error message system.
- Updated player search to avoid certain errors.

4/24/2009
- Maps statistics!  You can now view overall statistics for each map, as well as how you did on each map.
- Fixed up some search issues.
- Added "Skirmish Statistics" to the player info page, on the bar to the right (click on Overall Statistics to see a dropdown).
- The games list now shows the game name.
- Tons of changes in the backend to make things faster and more accurate.

4/9/2009
- Added Top Demigods section, showing which Demigods are being used the most, win the most, etc.
- Added Demigods tab to player info page, showing which Demigods each player has played their stats for that Demigod (note: stats are inaccurate for the time being).
- Added Skirmish Rankings tab to Top Players.
- Major changes to how we are collecting stats and data.
- Minor image and backend changes.

4/7/2009
- Added sorting to games list, search sorting coming later.
- Added small arrow icons to headers to show you which column is currently sorted, and in which direction.
- Updated games listing to make it more readable, added a new page for each game for extended info (click on the date to see the page).
- Minor background changes.

3/31/2009
- Sorting now works on rankings pages, has not yet been implemented into other pages.
- Search page columns slightly tweaked.
- Search bar now works properly in Chrome.
- Player info page now shows rank and favor points for overall and custom game stats.
- Other minor changes.

3/23/2009
- New design!
- Added experience and overall rank to search page.  All search statistics should now be "overall" statistics, not custom game or tournament stats.
- All pages now have proper headers and titles, should make things easier to navigate and harder to get lost.
- Player info page now shows the player's avatar and lists tournaments the player has participated in by default.
- General player statistics are now relegated to the right side of the player info page.  Clicking on "Overall Stats" will dropdown a box that allows you to switch between overall and custom game stats.
- Search box now submits by pressing enter.
- Added message to bottom of ranking page saying "Note: Rankings are updated once daily at midnight EST."
- Small presentation changes for numbers and dates.

3/10/2009
- Added new "Experience" rating on nearly any page that shows a player.
- You can now see what team a player is on for tournament rankings.
- Games list now shows the game type (Conquest, Flag Control, etc.).
- Added player count for each team on the tournament info page (note: this may not be accurate at the moment).
- Added "Top Clans" button that redirects to nowhere (for now).
- Renamed all instances of "Skirmish" to "Custom Games" (let me know if you find any I missed).
- Added tabs to top of rankings pages to switch between Overall rankings and Custom Game rankings.
- All instances of "Forces of Dark" renamed to "Forces of Darkness."
- Minor design, wording, and bug fixes.

3/5/2009
- Redesigned the player page and added tabs for separating stats in a more user-friendly manner.
- Added a player search bar to all Pantheon pages (top right corner).
- Separated skirmish, overall, and tournament stats into individual pages.
- Added an achievements page, but data is inaccurate (see Known Bugs below).
- You can now view a list of games a player has played.
- Clicking on any rank number will take you to the rankings list with that player highlighted.
- Added 2 buttons at the top of the page: Pantheon Tournaments and Top Players.
- "Pantheon Tournaments" button will take you to the latest (active or inactive) Pantheon tournament.
- Top Players now shows overall top players, not skirmish top players.
- Tournament information page now shows each team, the top players for that team, and the team's information.

Once again, the Pantheon statistics website is located at http://pantheon.demigodthegame.com.  I look forward to your feedback!

Bara

First off, thank you for the work you are doing on the site! It's looking great!

I'm constantly checking the stats, even though I know they are not accurate and the game is still in beta! (It's addicting!)

I did have a question though...

I don't know if it's a bug being worked out or if there is a mechanic behind the scenes that I do not know of, but my numbers on my stat page do not match up with the overall ranking.

For example, in the current tournament, the main list says I have 835 favor points, but my personal stats page reflects the more accurate number of 2050. Is this part of the wins/loses tracking issue?

It should be ok now.  We have a job that runs once daily to update the rankings and the data there.  So if the rankings (or the data) are off, check the next day and they should be up to date.

Quoting Leveller,

Good idea!  I'll add it to my list of todo's.

This is great, Bara.  Thanks for your hard work.

I can tell you looking at this data that games and player stats are not recording when a player quits between citadel destruction and end statscreen.  If that persists into release then we will see alot of frustrated competitive players

Why are they quitting?  And if they learn that it kills their stats, will they stop?

Zubaz:  I mean that if a player is losing, and disconnects in a specific manner before the endgame stats screen comes up then the game doesn't count as a loss or a DC, and doesn't show as a win for the winners.  It's an invisible disconnect.  This is pretty ripe for abuse, and sorta negates the whole point of having disconnects recorded as a statistic at all.

Yea I notice most people quit right after the citadel falls.   This happens in most online games so I'm not surprise to see it in demigod as well.

Great statistics website.  I really like the game list page, it shows which games I played and who.  Amazing.

It's all looking pretty good. I would have suggested some individual stat pages per demigod and per map, but I see you're already on that.

Any chance we could have an official signature image with stats listed on it? Like you see various third parties providing for World of Warcraft, for example. Alternately, will we be able to have read access to the data (not write, obviously) so we could pull in our own stats and have our own doohickies work some magic?

Obviously we could just scrape the page, but that's a fairly unfriendly way of going about it.

Sure -

on 3/4 I played a game at around 10:55 pm EST.  Fire-Ice and me vs TupacMike and one other player - let's call him "Furious."  The game lasted 41 minutes and immediately after the enemy citadel fell Furious disconnected and we got the "Lost connection - Eject player?" screen.  After a minute I selected to eject Furious, AI took over for the 4 seconds it took us to hit the stats screen, and the game was discarded from stat consideration.

It all makes sense, because Furious lost connection and we ejected him the game doesn't count.  The issue is that it's pretty clear he lost connection on purpose, and unless we want to look at the "Lost connection - Eject player?" screen forever or give up on meaningful stats with anyone who know how to pull a cable we need another option.

Track Ejections?  If you can keep people from ejecting willy-nilly this might be the practical option, because then when you see someone with perfect stats but 600 ejects you know what's happening.

or

If a player times out for longer than 90 seconds it counts as a disconnect and the game continues with AI?  That might be rough for the people who legitimately lose connection, but 90 seconds is a long time.

or

If a player is ejected within 1 minute of game end the game is still counted for stats purposes.  I don't know if you can do this, but it might be the best from a gamer's perspective.

- Demigod statistics: A list of each Demigod with overall statistics of how players do using that Demigod, as well as how each individual player does using each Demigod.

Can we extend that to the skills bought? I'm not asking for what people used on a per-match basis, but more of an overall trend.

EG:

when people used Sedna they bought:

Pounce I  100% of the time.

Heal I  75% of the time

Heal II 50% of the time

Life's Child 2% of the time

etc...

I hope they straight up reset the ladder on launch. It would be very daunting to see someone with 200 wins 2 hours after the game "released" and would discourage people from playing quite easily...

Not to mention this beta has losses that could be accounted for imbalances, disconnects, etc.

Don't wanna see a hit to my stats because someone decided they didn't wanna play anymore.

I was actually planning to make a post on this topic and the changes I tjhought needed to be made.  Might help if this was shifted to Dev Diary folder.  Anyways, I have a few suggestions/bugs:

1)  I would absolutely love to click on a game in my list and see the stats shown at victory.  I want to see stats and awards both listed.

2)  I couple games on my list don't have me as a player, for example:

4 3/6/2009 4:29:45 PM Skirmish

These errors curently account for 4 of my loses.

3)  Forces of Dark don't always show player, instead they are listed under forces of light.

Thank you for the info.  I've let the developer in charge of networking know about the issue and this topic, so hopefully she will resolve it soon.

Quoting HorseRadish,
How about Favor Item Tracking would be interesting to see how often a favor item is used?

We do have access to that information, so I could potentially provide such stats on the site.  However, we already discussed this and I believe we ultimately decided to keep it hidden for the time being.  This may change, of course, at a later time (or if enough people request it ).

Quoting RaveBomb,

We have data for the favor items that you can buy 1 of per game, but we unfortunately do not have access to the other data yet.  When we do gain access to such information, I'll be sure to update the site with it, but at the moment it isn't available to us.

Quoting ACDalzK,

Im curious as to how D/C's will be recorded? If a player D/C's how will the ladder record it and will it turn up as a D/C, Loss or unrecorded match in the ladder?

We have not yet decided on how to handle disconnects, especially considering the different types of D/C's that can happen.  If may happen accidentally, the user may quit, etc.  In games like Starcraft, disconnects at the end of the game are ok and actually encouraged; if you know you're going to lose, why continue playing for another 10 minutes?  I like this mentality and have been pushing to implement it for Demigod as well.

For the time being we ARE collecting disconnect stats, but we are not yet differentiating between early quits, disconnects, and end-game leaves.  We want to be able to allow players to leave the game at the end regardless if they are losing or quitting, and have the stats still count.  However, all of this is still up in the air.  I'll keep you updated.

Sounds like you are on top of it, thanks Bara.  FWIW I also like being able to leave if you are losing as long as you take the loss.  I think forced ejects should also count as a loss or at least show up in stats as a DC.

Alright, thank you for the data.  I'll take a look and see why it's doing that.  It may be an issue of the game not sending the proper TeamID at game completion.  Did anyone quit during this game?  Or any other odd event (disconnect, odd bug with networking, etc.)?
